I've just made MDE over the weekend. I was looking at the lvl6 armor modules for droids and see they need an armorsmiths "composite armor segments". Then after looking at the requirements for those, I see they have optional layers for protections in them. Do the segments we get from Armorsmithsneed to have the optional layers (i.e. blast & heat protection) in them ? Or will it even make a difference in final droid armor module ? I'd like to give an armorsmith some of my steel to make the schematic for me, then make them in my factory.

It makes no difference. You want plain vanilla comp armor segs.
