Does the quality of the resources used actually have any effect on the final product? In other words can I use any ol metal to make Protocols or should I look for some good quality stuff?

Previously? No. Quality didn't matter on anything in DE, it all turned out the same.
Data on TC indicates this is changing with the new patch.

No, but get materials that correspond to high Effectiveness, then experiment on effectiveness.
Effectiveness is the only thing that really does a noticeable thing for us so far, it decreases the chance of failure. Made 25 droids last night, 5 failures on some of the components, but NO failures on the droids themselves.

Well, it seems like it will have an impact when crafting Probot soon.
At least it does so on TC right now. And with the coming CH Nerf there is gonna be a war amongst the DE's to make the best probots and get all the sales. So it seems that we will have even less sales if we aren't a MDE from now on.
