Is there a way to do it? I think I read somewhere to name it while programming 5 or 6 different commands like 'droidy follow'etc. I tried this and it's still just 'an r-5 droid'. Any other way or will it be ' an r-5 droid' forever?

You have to program 4 commands with the same name. If you've done this, and the name doesn't stick, the name is probably being blocked by the name filter. No numbers or special characters other than - ' are allowed, and I think we've come to the conclusion that profession names are also blocked, ie, you can't name your droid "medic".

Also make sure you aren't making the name too long. And some words are not allowed for some reason.

Note, also, that it is case sensitive. So 'Bob' and 'bob' are considered two different names. If you name your droid 'bob', then you can't call him by using 'Bob'.

This works:

Bob follow

Bob stay

Bob group

Bob patrol

Thanks guys... I got it now. For some reason they wouldn't let me name the first R-5 unit I created'Firsty'. I could understand if I tried naming it 'Fisty' but 'Firsty' is edited.

Hi... I am now 3-3-4-4 DE, but have never been able to figure out how to name any of my droids? How does one go about doing this? It doesnt seem to learn the same way a creature does by teaching it 4 commands with the name tagged in front. How does one teach a droid his name?

Wow... thanks for you worthless help buddy. You could have taken the time to at least post how to do it.

See... if you actually read my post, I said that it wont learn a name after saying its name in front of the command 4 times. Hell... I ran through EVERY command you can teach it using this method and it WONT learn its name. Could this be because its a "walkie-talkie" droid? I HAVE read the faq, and it gave me no help. That is why i came here looking for imput.

Teaching it 4 (sometimes 5) commands with the name in front is the way to name a droid. However, the "talkie" droids cannot be named, and if your name is being blocked by the filter, you will not get any sort of message to that effect. The droid names use the same filter as for PC's, no numbers in the name, no special characters other than - or ' and it seems that profession names (like Medic) are filtered out as well.

Note - The same name filter as SWG uses is in effect -- you can't use numbers or spaces.
Note - You can only have one droid called out at one time, and only five in your datapad.
Note - Droids with Personality Modules that you can converse with currently cannot be named.

How do I get my droid to learn his name?

Teaching your new droid his name is no more difficult than programming it. Simply preface each command with your desired name. For example, if you're programming your droid to follow, instead of just /saying follow you'd /say Ralph follow. Once you've taught your droid 4 commands that use his new name, it'll appear over his head and he'll have learned it. Once that happens, you can re-program the commands without using his name so that they're easier to type during normal use.

How do I get my Surgical/Protocol/LE Repair Droid to learn his name?

Short answer? You don't. Droids with personality chips installed are programmed differently from the other types - you simply use the radial menu to tell them which commands to listen for. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to get them to respond to a name. It's allegedly on the list of bugs to fix, but you know how that goes...

Can I name my droid R2-D2 or C3P0?

Well... yes, and no. Droids are currently subject to the same naming filter as players so you can't use numbers in their names. You can, however, use the phonetic spelling (Artoo-Detoo and See-Threepio) like they do in the books instead. This is another issue that SOE has claimed will get fixed. I just hope to live that long...
