Thread: Why the debate re: DE combat Droids?

Ive heard a lot of debate here regarding Combat Droids. I am not a DE yet but have wanted to be one since before I bought the game. I got the game and found out that DE's could only make useless droids that no one wanted, minus the med droid of course. So I decided to become a Rifleman because I wanted to visit far away places meet strange and exotic people and kill them. But now I hear that De's are going to be getting some cool droids that people may actually want to buy. Not useless droids following you around, like r2. I go on group hunts all the time and people always pull out these large cool pets to hunt with. Why dont you people want DE's to be similiar to CH's in that respect. I myself want to be able to tinker around with stuff and experiment with stuff and also go out and raid rebel bases and group hunt too. ANd I would like to use awesome combat droids like the Droidekas that are in the droid engineers cave on LOk. Those look cool. Riflaman is a good profession but I am poor doing it. Theres not alot of money in killing things. I want to be an Droid engineer and make droids that people will actually want to buy for thier use. Right now I dont see many droids around because they have no use unless your a medic. Sorry this rant seems like a jumble of ideas, as its 330 am Inclosing I am on my way to De right now and would like DE to be an important member of the SWG gaming society. I want to be a merchant and a warrior. Whats wrong with that?

The development push for combat droids should begin this week in the In Development forum.

Perhaps you'd like to read everyones posts there to get a better idea of the different opinions and view points.

Right now, we're all crossing our fingers because no one really know what we'll be getting yet.

It's your decision whether to start now hoping some good stuff comes out, or wait and see what happens.

I think the largest debate stems from topics listed in The Official DE Plan that was presented several months ago but never acted on by the devs.

There was one phrase in there that ignited huge and heated debates - (can't even find it anymore, I guess they took it down) "combat modules that will be craftable and usable only by DE's".

Since most of The Plan was pretty vague, and we couldn't get any feedback from the devs about what they ment by that and other questionable statements, we all made assumptions trying to fill in the blanks.

Unfortunately, some of these assumptions lead to diametrically opposing views on some subjects.

Many people think that if we have DE-only droids it will ruin the profession.
If people have to take DE skills to use combat droids, we'll just be turned into Droid Handlers.

Other people don't think this will happen.
They just want combat droids so they can kick some butt.

Other issues came up such as WHERE would these skills to use combat droids be place - in the DE skill tree, or certs in the combat profession.

There have been many discussion, debates and rants on all sides.

Now I hate to preach, but I feel that if the skills to use combat droids were implemented PROPERLY in the DE skill tree, people could take just a few skill boxes to use the combat droids, and leave the crafters to build the combat droids.

But who knows how the devs might implement these skills.
I might go well, or it might go badly for the profession.

If you want a quick cath-up on some of the arguments, there's a thread stickied to the top of the DE forum titled "Poll - Do you want to be a crafter or a combat class", and another thread that got hijacked titled "Once again nothing but air it seems".

Just look around. With the impending release of the Droid Invasion thread in the In Development forum, it's all started back up again.

"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, How can we do this and not make another EQ? We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

Because theres more the SWG than just combat

Because, if done incorrectly, combat droids would just turn us into a BE/CH hybrid and would be a major break to the continuity

Thanks for the reply pro and ash. Ill be sure to check out those threads. I would really like some cool combat droids to build. I also want some good droids to sell to make some cash. We'll see what happens.

Well believe it or not there are actually some of us who want Droid Engineer only droids (maybe like 1ligh and 1 heavy class) and droids that everyone else can use. Ashrid sorry to burst your bubble but incase you havent notcied, there is no 'continuity'.

Do or do not...there is no try

Emok (Europe-Chimaera)
Master Droid Engineer (At last...and what a waste it seems)
Lotek Droidworks - New Sparticus - Corellia (-187 4707)
RETIRING MDE AND SWG IN 2 MONTHS.

you didn't read what ash said. he said if done incorrectly. He didn't say it couldn't or shouldn't be done.

And when he said continuity, he wasn't talking about continuity in people's opinions on the issue. of course there is no continuity there, but that's not what ash was talking about in his post.
