Thread: New Droid Type

I'm an end user of droids, not a droid engineer, and I haven't read this forum very much, so forgive me if this isn't something new.

I hate barker droids (because I hate spam), but like anyone else I want to be able to advertise. I would love to see a non-spamming alternative to advertising.

The idea I had was a kind of billboard droid. Instead of spamming in spatial, it would have a text message in the Description field when you /examine it. The owner would be able to write and rewrite the description at will, just like they can their own description, and the droid would still have the same "click for waypoint" option as a barker droid.

The billboard droid might even have some kind of occasional holo light show effect, like an entertainer droid, to draw attention to itself. I'm of two minds about that, though; some people might find it as annoying as I find spatial spam.

Is that something that you guys would be interested in asking the devs for?

I love my Barker droids! And I like the idea of a walking billboard, too.

I'd rather see a billboard strapped to the back of my droid, rather than havingto look in the description. I wonder if having that billboard feature would turn a starport into downtown Tokyo?

Are there lots of merchant barker driods roaming Chimera? Here on Bria, it's mostly Merchant Barker Players. The droids wait 30 seconds between barks...while players...spam.

I wonder if there is room in this game for an Image Designer Module. Something that would allow our ID buddies to do their thing outside of the tents?

Or perhaps even an entertainerdroid that allowes the entertainers to heal bf and mindwounds outside cantina. perhaps even buff outside cantina. Or would this destroy the last useful thing in camps?

- It's time the devs end the bitter fighting by giving the community a Non Jedi server. We have a few servers with TINY populations that could be changed to this ruleset. I support this idea because it punishes noone. - You can support it too. Click Here!

Also not a big fan of the spam but I honestly dont think I'd take the time to click on every billboard droid when I land in the starport. Honestly I think SOE needs to incorporate some kind of public advertising system beyond the auction channel. I think actual billboards would be a great idea. Some kind of big screens in front of the starport that scroll ads or messages. The mesages could be entered using a terminal and would require maintainence to keep on the ad board. Obvious there should be limits to the number of characters in an ad and a max lifespan on the message (like say a week). This would cut down on spatial spam, reduce the cost of advertising and give us something to read while we stand in line for buffs.

my server has more spam players than droids, since players can get more SPM (spam per minute) out, and do retarded and annoying emotes. Such as the chicken dance, while wearing hawtpants, and a chef's hat.

I really like this idea, except take it the next SW step and have floating Holograms with your shop info.

You could have the same character limit, but instead of spamming it, above the droid's head you'd see revolving colored text(of course you could choose the color....for once). It would be like a holo-emote or a dancer lighting effect. Doesn't seem like this would be too hard to put in, seeing as how the code for the basic function of this is already there. Just add to the graphics options.

That would rock.

What about when you're standing around waiting for the ship? Or, as you say, standing in line for a buff?

I think actual billboards -- or big, constant holo effects over the droid -- wouldn't be a good idea because it would add to the system load. Spaceports are already laggy enough. It also wouldn't feel right in the more remote places, like Tatooine, although I could see it in Coronet or Theed.

What I had in mind for the holo effect was something occasional, like the dancer's /dazzle or /spotlight specials. Just enough to attract someone's attention to the droid without being annoying or adding to the lag. Once their attention is drawn to it, a lot of people will click out of curiosity, especially if they're standing around waiting.

Thanks for all the responses!

I can see your point, and honestly, if I could just name the merchant droid anything I wanted it would facillitate the process a lot easier, and it wouldn't add to the system load too much. But no....they don't want numbers on droids. They're very clear about this.

*sigh*
