Thread: Partial Modularity Proposition

There has been quite a debate on the nature of modularity in this post:http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=droid_engineer&message.id=101419

After letting this ruminate some (bathroom break) I have a solution that uses modularity to enhance droid flexability but not make droids module commodified.

The pitch: (3 versions/variations)

New module: Hotswap module interface, allows for one hotswap configured module to be plugged into it.

New modules: A complete line of hotswap power-up style of mods that include everything from boosting crafting (aka bespin port) to helping with combat

Version 1 of proposition: The mostconservative approach, only allow new power-up style mods to be hot swappable, and only allow 1 Hotswap interface per droid.

Version 2 of proposition(middle ground approach): Allow certain pre-existing mods to be hotswapablle with a interface change but double the droids decay and/or indivdual mod decay. Also all older style mods with lose 1 to 10% effectiveness used as a hotswap, due to scaled down nature of the interface. Possibly 2 or 3 hotswapable allowed slots but not all.

Version 3 All mods would be hot swap enabled w/without an addition interface changing mod to hotswapable. droid would be capable of having all hotswapable slots if the DE so desired. Increased decay for all hotswap'd mods and reduced effectiveness.

The overall modularity argument is more or less version 3. I think personally version 2 would make everyone happy, certain mods were not meant to be consumable and wouldnt be good to have as consumable. but i think some mods like combat, stims, autorepair, crafting (with boost, like craftstations maybe +25 max) so on would be good variations of the theme to be able to make consumable....of course version 1 works fine as well making all high end/power functions be a part of a consumable mod.

Look it over please leave feedback

I'm sorry Gron, I just don't like any of the options. I simply don't see a need for swapping modules out.

Sure add new modules for us to put into droids, but I just don't like the swapping modules ideas for all the reasons I posted on the other thread.

Straker what do you suggest in regards to making DE's more intuitive to use and more useful overall? you once wrote that what bummed you out about DEs was our complacency. im not complacent about this droids in swg need a greater purpose, i think that is more critical then decay imho. but ill definelty take decay if the devs will do it sooner. there really is a laundry list of problems with droids in swg and i dont think we should ignore them. im not saying we should get uncivil, far from it, but i think its critical to keep pressure on the devs to make droids a fundemental part of swg and not just window dressing except for a handful of functions. this is just one idea that can allow for a more flexable and fun way to use droids, sure as it stands now with our low demand people wont want the hassle of toying with the droids, so what are some solutions to improving things?

I think that the 2 things that need to happen to make DE's better overall are "Need" and "Decay." We need better products that are Needed just as much as Armor, Weapons and other products. Our products need to wear out.

Any change that we make should drastically increase sales. We need to get the most out of our coding time.

I just don't see swapping modules as any of that. In fact I see it as us losing money. We would simply become parts suppliers, and then it would become a game of who can sell their parts the cheapest.

k im asking for specifics and you took what i said and just summed it up in 2 words

lol seriously what is are some systems to create need? saying DE's need "need" is fine im trying to make solutions
decay write up has been done and my need thread i made turned into a thread of what other profs see as ways to make "need"

this idea creates need, consumables, and is more fun then just a simple weapon style powerup. so got a better system in mind to make need?

Actually yes, I like your other idea with the particular modules much better for making "need." Doesn't matter that it's what the other profession want, if they were put in, it would increase "need."

You can also read my proposition about how Droids should have been implemented in space for another example of Droid "need." I just don't see how swapping modules helps Need.

I think Module swapping and Model redesign are dead issues. They where either the first, the most radical, or the most appealing proposals that deal with known big issues. But meanwhile they have been poked to death, and though no one wants to admit their dead they have been effectivly relegated to the scrap heap of ideas. We should really realize how infeasible or innapropriate these sub issues would be and move on.

However Droid powerups are great and i hope almost an inevitablity, especialy if combat droids get in the big picture. Im a big proponent of droid power ups. Modularity and experementation are minor issues, both thouroughly addressed by simple additons such as powerups. Go that.
