Disclaimer: I understand the devs' need for skillpoint requirements for combat droids. I also understand that next to every idea has been presented, and rejected. This one is probably among that group. With that said, I couldn't sleep too well last night, and I was brainstorming some ideas, this popped into my head and made me raise an eyebrow, and I would just like to post it here, so my idea gets out there and doesn't rot away in the back of my "data module" (omg, lame pun, I'm sorry, I'll never do that again.)
My idea:
Quested droids.
Okay, so we can all agree that combat droids such as the droideka and Roger Rogers would be a good thing. what not all of us agree on is that a droid user profession is a good thing. I am one of those completely against the introduction of a droid user profession.
So as I was trying to sleep last night, I thought "All of these droids are from the Trade Federation... hey wait a second, there are still Trade Federation NPC's scattered about..."
And then I thought "What if we add another faction, like we have Imperial and Rebel?" Now this new faction wouldn't be the same as Imperial and Rebel, you wouldn't join, gain faction and rank, and faction troops. But what if you could do a series of quests for them (something along the line of Jedi, tho I doubt that time draining and difficult)? Then, after you've completed the series of quests, you are awarded a certification to use Trade Federation droids (droideka, Roger Roger).
Now now now... the devs say there still need to be skill point requirements for the "extra checkers" right? Well, instead of that, just give the droids some drawback. 1 that I was thinking last night, is that these would be illegal weapons... so if you get scanned, or search, your faction doesn't matter, NPC guards will start attacking you. And if you're strolling through town with one? You get an NPC TEF and regardless of faction, they will attack you.
Another drawback I thought up just right now... is that the droids would be permadeath... once they are gone, they are gone. That way you'd have to get another one, and you can't just run away from battle for a minute and 15 seconds, to store it, then call it again. Instead, you'd have to buy another one.
And of course... they'd only be craftable by those loveable Master Droid Engineers
I also remember an arguement a long long time ago (I've made one bad joke already, I'm not going to finish -THAT- statement...) that the Droid Engineers could undercut prices, or give them away to n00b friends or whatever, and you'd have a newbie, or someone else, running around with free droids. Well, the quest would prevent newbies from getting them. And maybe the schematics should be questable for Droid Engineers, or limited use or something, as to make sure the Droid Engineer would want full compensation each time he makes a droid.
This opens up the possibility of new combat droids for everyone (the way I think it -should- be), but you also still have to work for it.
As I said, I'm sure something simular has been brought up, rejected, buried, gravesite danced on. But I had this idea last night trying to sleep, and just wanted to put it out there so it didn't waste away.

I think it isn't a bad idea, but goes through way too much effort and still creates balance issues. I think the best (and possibly only) way to introduce mid to heavy combat droids without skillpoints is as faction perks. Have factioned DE's be able to buy limited use schematics from the recruiter, which they can then sell to someone (who would have to "activate" the deed, costing them faction points as well). The droid would be just like other faction pets, it would have permadeath, would only attack factional targets, etc.

My question with that is, which faction gets them? Because, like I said, the droids that will get implemented are Trade Federation droids. Now... I'm going to be perfectly honest and admit I don't know all of the Star Wars story as much as everyone. I pretty much know the original trilogy, and have seen episodes I and II, but didn't get into them the way I did the original trilogy...
Wouldn't the Trade Federation be the enemy to both the Empire and the Rebels? And if not, it just still feels weird getting TF droids from the Alliance or the Empire.
It's not something I'm neccesarily against tho. I think that any idea is better than a droid user profession.

Both sides would get them to be fair. And if continuity is a worry, the trade federation didn't own all the battle droids in the galaxy. Sure, they were the only ones who really used a droid army, but they weren't specifically "trade federation" brand battle droids.
