Thread: Non skill point certification (an alternative)
(I’m not sure if this idea has been brought up before or not. If so, my apologies.)
I understand where the devs are coming from in their objections to an ‘existing skill point’ based certification system. In order to get the additional combat abilities of a pet, you need to invest in it. By introducing certs into all the existing professions in an already balanced system, you aren’t really investing; you are getting a free bonus.
But TH has said there will be faction droids available in the future. Now I assume this would basically be a perma-death cert system bought by faction points (buy a droid with FP and lose it when it dies). Could the same type of approach not be used for ‘normal’ XP?
Have a limited use cert that will expire after so many droid deaths, but that is acquired by experience points rather than skill points or faction points.
The expenditure of xp would ensure that something has to be given up in order to acquire the combat abilities of the droid and the limited uses would ensure that it is not a one time purchase; so you couldn’t have a higher than CL10 pet basically for free for the rest of the game. It is also something everyone can do without having to branch off into yet another profession, which is what DE’s are looking for; a wide and varied range of goods for a wide and varied range market.
What type of xp is debateable, but combat xp is the first and most obvious that comes to mind. Perhaps squad leader xp for multiple droids etc.
The XP costs would be on a sliding scale, higher for higher creature levels (should really be pet levels 
). The number of uses, or deaths, would depend on the CL, more for lower levels, less for higher.
Just to clarify, the perma-death isn’t actual droid perma-death. That’s a separate issue.
Any major holes I’m not seeing right away?

Is this an acceptable cert type system for both sides?
It is not a terrible idea. Pets (and exp) are lost to link death and server issues all the time. Here i see a small issue.
Anyone else have any holes in this idea?
