How do you come to this conclusion? Last time I checked Han never had a droideka following him around. Leia had R2 and 3PO to help her out (granted R2 did engange in some fighting but I would hardly consider him a combat droid), I there were some surgical droids on hoth, the imperial probe droid (which was not a combatant), don't think I saw fett using a droid to help capture Han, Jabba had a droid, though it only translated things for him..... If you want I can go on. Anyway, my point is the majority of the Star Wars universe (as well as the time period in which this is set) has droids set in a primarily non-combat role, so any argument that combat droids make for real star wars is not applicable.

For this game to be REAL to star wars, you better go into combat with a droid unless you are a jedi
If this were real Star Wars there wouldn't be a single creature pet (aside from mounts or beasts of burden for those who can't afford vehicles) in sight. Likewise, lone characters would not be sitting there taking on whole packs of rancors with ease, and everyone and there brother would not be a(n) <insert flavor of the month profession here>.

- Combat droids are a MUST for our class. They will be easy to implement (compared to adding new utilities to older droids) and will give us a brand new market unseen since the early probot days.
To create an effective combat droid system, it must NOT be unbalancing to the current combat system and it must be reasonable to create.
PROPOSAL.
Create 2 trees of new combat droids - Melee and Ranged.
There will be 4 levels of combat droids. Level 1 being our faithful Probots, up to a powerful level 4.
How do we make this balanced, so that newbie twinks aren't running around with a half million dollar combat droid?
Use a system already implemented. Mitigation.
Ranged and Melee mitigation is given within combat trees, where the highest level of mitigation is in the Master box. Mitigation 1, 2, and 3 will coorespond with certifications with Level 2, 3, and 4 droids.
What this system will accomplish:
- Easy to create - will be based off the mitigation system, so little programming is necesary.
- Balanced - With a certification system it will be impossible to have an overpowering droid for your current combat ability. People spend SKILL POINTS to earn better droids.
- These droids will vary GREATLY depending on resources used and experimentation, so we will actually get paid for creating higher quality droids.
- Will give us a new market. Currently the only thing we make that sells are medical droids. Utility only goes so far.
- Will create a more realistic Star Wars experience. Droids in this game are near EXTINCT.

There's one main problem with this, the players are in no way paying anything for these newfound combat powers. Ok, so they're certed, they have to pay the cost of that skill to get the droid, but are you planning on taking all the other things they would have gotten at that skill out? Even if you do put them in, how do you then rebalance the environment so that it is more challenging to compensate for the increased overall potential strength of a player (since any droid strength added is over and above what they already have at no cost). This screws everyone who doesn't want to use a combat droid in combat.
