I have recently made Master Droid Engineer (for the second time after a year break from the game) and received a custom order from a new client to make a probot combat droid.
I had good quality materials (no the best, but it resulted in good results). In the end I made a 3100 HAM, 500 Damage Rating, Armor Resistance 20%. Not too shabby I thought.
However, it took numerous hand-crafted resources to get to this point.
On the FIRST run: I crit failed on one of the Combat Modules and I got poor results on 4 of the experimentation of the Combat Modules. Once I got everything in place, I crit failed on the experimentation of the Final HAM of the Droid (~2500 HAM in the end)
On the SECOND run: I again got poor results on 4 of the experimentation of the Combat Modules. In the end I got the droid that I listed above.
In the end I wasted a lot of materials making this droid by hand. 8 experimentation failures on the Combat Module and one crit failure.
Question then comes, how in the world can people sell these droids for minimal costs? (Less than 10 CPU) I understand, that some players will be able to harvest their own resources and keep their costs down. I mean, I wasted a whole droid and wasted a good majority of my gas and copper, not to mention all the materials to make the droid brains that need to go into the combat module.
MORALE OF THE STORY IS: USE FACTORIES. Get a bunch of the resources that you need, then make factory runs of these combat modules.
I was hoping to impart this knowledge that I learned to the Newbie Droid Engineers.
I also realized, the difference between a 500 Combat Probot Droid and a 550 Combat Probot Droid (Perfect Resources/Experimentation). Is only 8 points of DAMAGE (or less than a 5% increase in damage) !!! Man, there is no way that I am going to bust my rear for those extra points of damage. I am not going to pay like 10+ CPU for the best quality resources that ever spawned.

dont get me wrong that is a good practice, i have yet to make many factory runs of stuff and do hand crafted modules most of the time.I have 14ish crafting tools, and use my citys 44ish crafting station and i get a lot of good results. If i craft with my droid i get a lot more fails than when i use the citys station.

The create a new wdg crafting station module when you have your droid out NEAR the city station.
The new module will have the same rating as the city station.
I did the same, and get as good results using my droid as when using my own 42.8 (still looking for a better) station.

I'm not sure this really produces different results. Droid crafting stations currently have no influence on the crafting process (aside from satsifying the requirement of having a private crafting station).

Actually pulling your Droid out near the crafting station overides the crafting station, meaning you don't get any bonuses at all. You can tell this by the fact that with your droid out near the station, you can't open your input hopper.

It's been my experience that the crafting tools simply wear out over time, even though they don't show wear in the same way that weapons or armor do. As a crafting tool ages ( several weeks, depending on crafting activity) I see more crit failures and more "moderate successes". When this starts, I replace the tool. It does seem to make a big difference. When I craft new tools, the crit failures completely disappear for quite a while.
Factory runs ARE a good way to replicate a successful craft item, but if you're having as many problems as you say, try replacing the tool. Other suggestions I've seen on this forum are:
1. Do not wear armor when crafting.
2. Use as high a quality crafting station as possible.
Can't testify to these working, but can't hurt!
Good luck!

1. Use Pyrollian Cake for upping your assembly successes.
2. Use Bespin Port for making critical item schematics (combat modules, harv modules). It is 1 use per experiment, so space it out a bit so you don't get full.
3. Run the entire schematic in your factory.
More - don't have BF. It seems (in my experience at least) to decrease your successes on experimentation. Also, get a good set of tools and never use a droid workstation for important schem creation. They don't help with your successes at all - a decent workstation is a must.
I also have a droid crafting suit with droid assembly bonuses as well as droid experimentation (gives me 12 points so I can make completely UBER survey droids that don't sell since JTLS came out).

Thanks, those are some really good tips. I really hope other DE crafters see this thread as well and take the hard-earned lessons that I learned to heart. Factory runs are almost a must to decrease your overhead. Especially for high quality items.
Items that do not depend on quality can be done by hand and you can get away with it. However, I realized that the chance of crit failure is greater than 1/1000. Which means if you can pump out 1000 items with that one schematic of anything that you can make (quality or not) you are saving on resources. Heck, if you can do that with 1/100 items, you are still far ahead of the game IMO.
