Okay, first of all, don't get caught up in my use of "cert" in the subject line. These are not certs as people typically think of them, they're something different. My little brain just can't think of a better name right now.

I envision skill point certs being additional boxes at the top of every tree in every profession. They're not necessary to complete the profession, but they're there for the people who would like to complete them.

These boxes would be earned using the same experience used to earn the rest of the tree that they sit above. And they would cost some additional number of skill points. The reward for buying one of these boxes would be some number of +Droid Level or +Droid Use points. To limit droid use, put the +Droid Use boxes above all Master boxes.

Doesn't this solve all of the problems at once?

It solves the Devs' balance issues because the skill points and experience point costs can be balanced to suit each separate profession. If they don't want Bounty Hunters running around with powerful combat droids, all they have to do is make the boxes above the Bounty Hunter trees (and their pre-requisites) more expensive. If they want to encourage people to become Master Entertainers and allow those people to have easy access to powerful combat droids, they can make all of the Entertainer boxes cheap. You can only complete a limited number of Level 4 trees as things currently stand due to skill point restraints, so as long as the boxes are designed correctly there's no need to worry about someone creating a template that allows for +100 Droid Levels. (By my count, you're limited to a maximum of14 level 4 boxes and 3 Master boxes. So grant +2 Droid Level at each Level 4 and +1 Droid Use at each Master.)

It solves my own personal bugaboo because everyone has access to combat droids if they want to spend the extra points. Droid Engineers aren't any better at combat than any other crafting profession unless, during balancing, the Devs decide that they should be.

It solves the hybrid camp's bugaboo because Droid Engineers can use the droids they create without having to pick up another profession. If the Devs see fit, they can even grant additional abilities within the Droid Engineer trees or at Master Droid Engineer to give us some sort of "perk".

What's not to like?
