Thread: Profitability of Droid Engineers
Sorry Jenden, but the living you can make off it is adequate..not good, and far below that enjoyed by other 'elite' crafting professions.
Certainly the 'return customer' rate is extremely low, especially if they bought the right droid recently with all 4 craft stations in it, plus med and storage (Aka R3). Most are returning for novelty value because they bought a cheap R5 to get started with.
There is nothing in the upcoming 2 publishes that remotely holds out a hope of this changing, except that we will be getting stim and woundpacks for droids (and of course that players will be able to have both a pet and a droid out). It is true that the combat potential is there, and with it a much bigger market, but we are currently not there, nor do we know when and/or if it will ever come to pass.
Thats the honest answer.

I guess it all depends on what you consider a good living. While most of the weaponsmith/armorsmiths I know have more cash, they don't really have anything better. With my droid income I can buy anything in the game I want, its just a matter of how many credits you have left afterwords. I've generally got a good 1-2 million in the bank, don't really see any reason to need more.
I've never encountered anything in the game that I haven't been able to afford with plenty left over.

1-2 million and you're at the top of your profession. Any other master craftsman makes 1-2 million a day at the top of their profession (ok, more).
Like it said, Its an OK living and you'll get by. But you wont be rich.
Rich is 10s of millions of credits. Absurd is over 100k

I was almost rich, then I grinded armorsmith and started handing out money to guildmates to improve their crafting. Im down to my last million. On the bright side, Im Master Armorsmith and as soon as I find a couple things I should have more money than ive ever thought about.
I probably should start getting ready for Patch 7 though. I think run some LE, R2, and Probot Chassis.
I'm not super wealthy, but I figure I'm doing well enough. I have a bit over 3M right now, down from about 3.5M because of some recent heavy purchasing. I've got about half a dozen heavy extractors (12-13 BER), a pretty nice suit of composite, a large Naboo house, medium Naboo house, small Naboo house, and a medium Tatooine house, 2 equipment factories, a wearables factory, and a structure factory and I've got two mounts that I purchased on the day they were released.
I do not sell resources. I make pretty much all my money purely through DE (I did make around 500k or so the day vehicles were released). I also do not spend all day long at major crossroads spamming for sales. I've got my vendors on two planets (soon adding a third) and that's it. All I do is log in at night, find what sold, build replacement units, handle any special orders, and restock my vendors and tend to structures and vendors. I don't even survey all that much, running out maybe twice a week when swgcraft shows a new good resource that either is better than what I have or is close to something I'm running low on. I've considered setting up a vendor for Bounty Hunter droids at one of the 'hotspots' but to be honest I haven't done it because I know how much time and effort it would take to keep it stocked.
Are there Weaponsmiths who make more than me? You better believe it, but I also happen to know there are Master Weaponsmiths making less. Yeah, Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths average more income, but that hardly means that a DE can't make money.
Well, you hit it right on the nail. The fact is, there is only a handfull of DE's per server because of thelow profitability.
Since you're a BE....think of DE like a BE except:
1) we don't have pet-stims (yet).
2) we don't have tissues to sell to tailors
3) we don't have food enhancements to sell to chefs
4) our combat droids are sub-par to anything a BE can make.
5) we are the gate to the BH's investigation tree.
6) we can make pretty portable crafting stations and storage compartments.
Personally I don't think that the DE profession will truely become profitable until SE comes out when people will probably be needing astrogation droids, droid brains for hyperdrive motivators, etc. Perhaps SOE will finally wake up to the fact that in the movies only one combat creature was actually nominally under control of someone (frankly I believe that Jabba's Rancor keeper would have been torn apart had he dared step into the cage) and that droids were EVERYWHERE.
But that is just one mans opinion.
Actually, the arena in AotC also featured beings controlling creatures (nominally) and making them attack people. That said, Creature Handlers do still take a much lower position in the movies than droids.
