To the questions:
1 - Depends on what you want it to do.
2 - Depends on what you want it to do.
3 - With Publish 7 (supposed to be out on Tuesday, March 16th) you will be able to have your droid out at the same time as creature pets.

Droids are flexible. Their purpose is defined by the modules put in it. At this time, the R3 can have the most modules installed at one time, making it by far the most flexible of the droids, and with publish 7 it will also be able to hold combat modules (Not recommended) and be a CL10 droid in that regard.

With any combat capable droid, the better it is at combat, the fewer other modules can be installed, making it essentially an either/or situation.
