Thread: Prospective DE
I was thinking of creating a new character that would be a DE, so i came over here to get the scoop on what is going on with this profession - i'm glad i did!
I've read the State of the Profession and other related major threads, and i have a couple of questions/comments/suggestions...
1. when a droid is "broken", can only a repair droid fix it, or can a DE repair the droid as well? are DE's the "doctors" of droids? this would seem to make them more useful to bring along in a party if they can fix the droids of the other characters and/or even give the droids something akin to buffs - maybe by "temporarily overloading/overclocking their processors/batteries" or similar rationalization.
2. do protocol droids actually perform any translations? i currently have a character that is human-centric and refuses to learn all the alien languages - shouldn't owning a protocol droid make it so that i could understand and communicate with aliens?
3. when vehicles come out, who is going to build and service/repair them? while not as intelligent or self motivated as droids, i would think that building/repairing vehicles is something that fits more closely with the DE profession than the others, and could be one of your skill trees.
4. totally agree with posts i've seen about using/requiring droids for buildings and player cities. you should have a working relationship with the architect profession to put optional or required droid slots in buildings, based on function and size. i would LOVE to have even a simple MSE droid for a small house that would give a 10% discount on maintenance fees. and a PA hall should have a protocol droid near the entrance that can be programmed to provide information about the PA and what they offer, and RX/MSE or other droids (maybe up to 3) to provide maintenance/upkeep discounts. Also, these droids would be attached to the structure and not count against the number of droids a player has "active" - and they would decay, so that you have to either have a repair droid or DE (see above) stop by periodically for scheduled maintenance. Finally, having a medical droid (not a MSE droid with a med module, but an actual med droid) in a structure should provide healing modifiers - this makes coming home more of an issue for a character than just using it as a storage pit; if a character can return to his/her home and heal faster than in a camp, then down time would be reduced, etc, and that is what combat based professions want - to get back out into the field as soon as possible.
5. also concerning vehicles - provide abilities for droids to work with vehicles as in #4 (reduced costs or repair of decay) or give bonuses to terrain negotiation, etc.
6. how about combat practice droids?Luke learned to use a light saber by practicing with a remote, which is just a low level droid. have disposable droids that you can sell to the combat classes that will only fight in duels. the character can buy the droids and call them out, select/duel, and fight until either the droid is destroyed, or the character is incapped (at which point the droid is used up). they would not be repairable, but therefore cheap enough for combat classes to want to purchase them in quantity -this would allow even artisans and entertainers to do combat without having to go wandering around in the dangerous rural areas and you could practice in your PA halls on the roof, etc.The DE makes money off the sale, just like BH droids, andi can't see this getting abused by combat characters becausethe droids cost moneyand it would probably be faster to go to a mission terminal and get a real mission that pays money - but the option would be there.
7. finally, i couldn't agree more with all the posts about droids giving the game a Star Wars feel. I HATE the darn **edit** feel of CH, and glad they are getting a nerf - although i think a character should be able to have one creature orone droid, and one faction pet out at a time, rather than just one of anything. i would much rather see every player have a droid than a pet rancor/panther/etc.
