Thread: Why did you become a DE?

I think that with all the arguing going on the best way to figure it all out is to see why people became DE's. Don't just post what you always tell people, take a minute to think about it and really try to figure out why.

I became a DE for 2 primary reasons. First of all, I love building things (especially electronics/computer type things). Every RPG type game I've played in I've made some kind of mechanic, engineer, hacker.... you get the idea. Droids are the thing in SWG tied closest to this technology engineering idea.
Second reason, I enjoy making people happy. The primary purpose of droids in everything I've seen (and in this game at this point), is to help people, make their life easier, and make them happy. It makes there life easier, and it fulfills that wish many of them had for owning their very own R2D2. If I didn't need to pay for anything I would give my droids away for free, the regular flow of tells and emails I get from my customers thanking me for the droid and telling me how much they love it is truly my favorite part of the job.

In Everquest, I was a rogue and guild officer for a large, old guild. I got tired of the "group, group, group" of it all, and wanted something I could do alone... I wasn't sure exactly how the combat professions would be, but I figured Artisan would work well.

Initially, I was torn betweenArchitect and Droid Engineer... I wanted to build my own "Blasterkin City"...When I realized there weren't any player cities in the game yet,Droid Engineer seemed to be the only logical profession for me... I'm a big computer guy, and I fix/repair aircraft electronics for a living... I can't cook to save my life, and I hated the "Smith" crafting in Everquest...

In the end, the lack of player cities & the "star-warsy"ness of droids made me choose the Droid Engineer line... It's been a rocky travel, but Droid Engineers have the single biggest potential from anything I've seen in any game to date and I want to be one of the "pioneers" of the profession... Telling noobs 2 years from now about "how much it sucked back at release." Little different from most people, I'm sure... But I don't regret one bit of it... Well, maybe the "last big patch" bit where we were completely inop for four days... That's beside the point.

SWG is my first MMORPG, and I was intially intrigued with the artisan concept, and decided it would be fun to one day have a shop to build and sell products in the game's virtual economy. And I've always been fascinated with robots in general and SW droids (from the original trilogy and early EU stories) in particular, hence the choice of DE was logical.

-Ive always liked droids, robots etc.

-Im not realy into wondering around the galaxy, searching for something new to blow up.

-I like to see physical results from my hard work. Droids "seemed" like the right profession for this at the time.

I started out going after Master Combat Medic. I saw that way too many people were doing the same thing. School started and I couldn't spend the amount of time I needed to spend to master combat medic. I love technology related things, and thought the idea of having my own droids would be really cool.

Just restarted an old second account of mine. On my main account I have been a

Ranger

Fencer

Worn lots of armor made with bone and hide

Been a master creature handler

Then i decided I wanted to do something Star Warsy. So I made a Mon Cal (cant be more Star Wars then that I thought) and made him a DE. Because Droids are the one common link to all things Star Wars. I know the professions borked beyond belief. But I see its potential. And the believe that we will be the vehicle manufactuers some day.

Because I'm stupid and dumb. I thought Droid Engineers were cool and played a much more important role in Star Wars Galaxies, but boy was I wrong when I learned that the DE Skill is just becoming more and more useless as time goes by.

Whenever I grind Droid Armor Level 1 for EXP, I keep saying to myself: "Don't worry, when the Space Expansion comes out, you'll congratulate yourself for being a Droid Engineer", just to keep my hopes up as a poor Droid Engineer.

Oh ya, now I remember, I always wanted to own a cool droid, maybe even tones of droids. Lucky me, I own4 droids and that's it. My datapad says I can't have anymore pets. My dream of calling out hundreds of droids and controlling them shatters before me.

I always wanted to have my own R2 and 3PO droid. Oh look, I'm 0-0-2-3 now, I can build R2 droids... what's this? I need a factory? How can I afford a factory? I'm selling R4 droids at 4000k a pop, which aren't even good quality, which is why I sell 1-2 droids a week (not even). I even Mastered Artisan just so I can build Power Units and other stuff... I barely have enough skill points left for my Pistoleer skills.

Do I sound depressed? Hell ya... if it takes 2 hours of non-stop grinding using macros and constant mouse clicking to raise myself from 0-0-2-2 to 0-0-2-3 then you bet your a$$ I'm depressed when that 0-0-2-3 leads me to nothing more than still being poor like crazy.

Why am I still a Droid Engineer you ask? Simple... cause surrendering all those skill points I've wasted at least 10 hours on would simply ruin me as much as that kid who commited suicide because his power Everquest character got deleted by accident.

We work hard for nothing... you gotta give us some credit at least.

I always loved robots/droids. I really wanted to be able to make them. I never went into DE as a way of making any money, I never planned to be a "droid to order" DE.

What I dreamt about was being able to build a decent combat droid, group with my friends and give them all one that would make our group collectively stronger and kill some hard mobs or in pvp. But when we all take our probots out, by the end of a hunt they are usually all dead.---> LOL!

The reason I became a droid engineer:

-I watched all the movies and they all ONE thing in common, there were droids everywhere and they made the movies ALIVE.

So I thought that the same thing would happen in SWG... pfft, I say!

I am much like you. I love droid engineering. Droids are the second best thing that makes Star Wars what it is. When I really think long an hard about the star wars universe this is the order of things that come to mind.

1) Jedi/Sith (Cant go wrong with this... Star Wars is the Force)

2) Droids

3) Space Battles

I understand the last one is not comming out and that this game is not initially designed for space explorationa dn that it will exist at a later date.

Jedis are soon coming (so they got that handled)

They have droids, but they dont have the droids from all the movies. We want more chasis not necessarily because we are greedy, but we want to see all the droids interacting with other people.

I am a Droid engineer because I love droids. They are one of the core elements of Star Wars as I am indicating above. Without them, it would just be another sci-fi film with mystical abilities. Hell, I love C3-PO and R2-D2. One of the best teams in existance. They are fun to watch and you marvel. How is it that these droids always find themselves in the mix of everything. Things just happen to them. C3PO is the classic nerdy, why me while R2 just beeps around, and gets C3PO in trouble and then comes to the rescue.

R2 and 3PO have some of the best acting/script writing. Think about it, R2 is just a can with a dome top and treads. He really looks odd, but we accepted him the second we looked at him. I loved all the droids in the movies. The Roger, roger droids were great. The Droid decas were menacing and they were shield generator juggernauts. Two jedis had great difficulty agaisnt two and they new they would not win nor loose against them. Mouse droids were cute little things that ran around and were like a mouse. Very fun.

And finally, I love making droids because it is serene. All I have to do is collect my gas, chemicals and minerals... come to my shop and craft. Maybe make schematics and let my factory do some of the work for those large requirements (like GP modules, memory modules or the required factory crated items). But it is serene. I talk to my clients personally and get to know them. I take my time with my droid construction and I tell them that and I role-play the experience. It is great. Some people are disappointed in SWG because they want the game to take them into the world. Granted, a great game would. Right now there are bugs that are hard to overcome, but we need to just immerse ourselves into the world.

I have begun declaring myself as a roleplayer and you would be surprised at the respect I get. People begin to talk to me in more than just... Can you sell me a droid. They say... Good Master Droid Engineer, I am in the market for purchasing a droid. Can you accomidate me. Or something to that effect. And it is fun. I have a great time with it!

Initially, I wanted to be a DE so that I could have a droid army, but my views have completely changed in the last month. Now I am having the time of my life because I use my imagination.

As those who have known me for a few years or so can attest to, there are two features of any scifi story that appeal to me. The first is Starships/Starfighters. The second is droids.

Well, let's see...it's Star Wars, but where are the Stars? (should be a familiar quote to those who've been to the same places I have over the years) Seriously, I realize that the space expansion is coming out in the future, but until it does (or at least, until I can get into the Beta for it), I can't go that path.

So, since there's no starships or starfighters to create, build or customize, that left droids. Hence I am a droid engineer...even though I have yet to see even 5% of the pets people use as being droids. Currently the ongoing count I've had is 53 droids vs. 2543 creatures/faction personnel, though admittedly the count isn't anything official as it is based on the places I travel--which isn't all that extensive.

Once starships come out, provided there's a crafting profession that is involved in building them, I will probably switch to that and give up on DE completely unless droids end up having a real use (and I don't mean a 'use' as in a building component or furniture, though those uses do help maintain a business--they don't help in providing a Star Wars feel to the game).
