OK, this was on a different forum, but I just had to bring it over here in light of all the junk that has recently gone on and how upset and downpeople were getting.

It really hit home with me.
I hope it does with you.

About Nerfs, PvP, and attitudes. Read please.

This has to do with pvp and such, so i guess it can go in this forum, even tho its not entirely on topic. Just chose GCW mainly because its one of the few choices left to reach the whole community. Basically just ran into a few things in game and on the forums that got me thinking about this, so i wanted to post it.

When i play this game, and frankly, a lot of other online games, i see a lot of the same stuff. Nerf this, nerf that, I cant beat this guy, this guy owns everyone and needs to be nerfed. Also the post pvp talk, it kinda gets me down. I ran into this some today, and then was in the forums later and waded thru the nerf threads, and it got me thinking a bit. Thinking of my little brother.

I used to play UO with my little brother. That games a blast, especially in pvp. Now from the first part of my thread, you may think that im one of those people who graciously accepts defeat, and doesnt talk trash afterwards. I wish i was all the time, but frankly, it doenst turn out like that. I try to keep it under control, but sometimes i just get mad. Face it, people just dont like to lose, and its easier to yell at someone else, than to go, Wow i suck, or wow, i messed up bad there. But my little brother, i remember, he was always quiet for the most part. Yeah he did some talking after battles, but it was mostly along the lines of, i got you, but if you had done X instead, you would have had me, and so forth and so on.

Another thing that i remember about him, was the way that changes in game never affected him like it does other poeple. FOr those of u that played or still play UO, remember AOS? For those that dont, AoS was Age of Shadows, an expansion that came out for Ultima which totally revamped the entire combat system. Im talking total change, as in, throow out the old system, and bring in the new. I remember reading about the changes and having fits. Logging in, trying them out, and getting owned, and absolutely having screaming matches at my monitor. My brother, on the other hand, he played for a couple days, saw what was going on, what worked now, and what was pretty much out the window as far as usefulness, and within 2 weeks, he had his pvp guy back up and running in total ownage mode. He was always better than me at pvp anyway, he was just gifted that way. I remember how he joined the evil rp guild and i was in the good rp guild. We had wars, and one time we were lucky enough to both be on when our guilds were having a staged battle, and i remember watching helplessly as a ghost as he waded thru my guild ranks after annihlating me with ease. He always just said, ok this is how the game is, and this is what i need to do to be good. This guy is better than me, hes got skills i cant match up against with this template, so thats just the way its going to be. That was one thing i never could do, not like he did. I always got furious, told my mind when i lost. Usually something along the lines of, If you didnt have that cheap ass attack, you wouldnt have gotten me. Then my brother would lean over and go, he does have that attack dude, you better figure out a way to beat it, or he s just gonna keep owning you all nite long.

He was always like that. There was an 8 year difference between us, and i remember when i was 13 or 14 or so, and he was 6-7, and i played Street Fighter 2 constantly. I wanted someone to play against, so i taught him how to play. I remember holding back on him for awhile, and then after a while, i would come home, he would be playing, and i would start taking it easy on him, and he would perfect me. Then i would go ok, thats enough of that crap, and try dropping him hard. Well im sure you can guess it, but he owned me. He owned me in street fighter, he owned me in football, he basically had my number in most anything that we both played.

I just remember that he always took things calmly, remembered that it was a game, and that all you needed to win or have fun, was adjust your playstyle a bit, or just accept that you wont win all the time, and if you like your guy the way he is, you should leave him that way and just accept losing sometimes. I remember not being able to wait for Galaxies to come out, so that we could start up our guild, and start having a ball. He played the beta for awhile, i got a copy of it from a friend who had access to it, and i gave it to him, since i figured he may as well get some knowledge in before live, so he could commence with the owning right away.

The game was released on June 26th in my area, and i picked up my copy and went home and installed it, played for about an hour, was waiting for him to come home and start up his account so that we could get things going, when i got the call from my mom that an out of control semi hit his car on the way home from lifeguard duty, and he was seriously injured. I drove home and when i got there, found out he had been killed instantly. It was 3 days before my birthday.

So when people scream about nerfs and about players being cheap, and when i do it, i try to remember my bro, who would never have done that. I hope maybe some people who read this thread will too. Adapt if you want, or just play your guy, but try to remember that things arent as bad as they seem in the heat of the moment. He always did.

I would have liked kickin ass with you bro. Your twin took your place little bud, and we are doing pretty **edit** good, but we still miss ya.

Ok im done.

"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, How can we do this and not make another EQ? We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

I lost focus shortly after progman63 said "OK, this was on a...."

What's this all about, and what does it have to do with DE?

Wow. This is a point that I've tried a few times to get across and sometimes fail with my friends. It's just a game. No matter how much you rant on this board and think it sucks, it's just a game. Either play it or don't play it. It's all about fun and nothing more. Who cares if DE works or not. Either have fun or don't do it. Who cares about the nerfs. SWG should not fill but a small part of our lives, and if you spend too much time onwhy DE "sucks" then you're wasting too much of your life on a game.

Very touching story, and I wish more MMORPG'ers were like his brother. These forums and the game itself would be much more enjoyable.

unless you find that part of the fun of the game is mocking the broken professions on the forum boards...
