Thread: My litte rant about languages/protocol droids that I think is quite badass

It needs an overhaul as the system currently in place has no value or meaning and adds nothing to the immersion of the Star Wars world, it is a token language system that has been put together quite lazily in my opinion, it is a half baked solution.

Languages should take up 1 skill point each in my opinion. This would detract people from learning them all the second they create a new character, it would give them a meaning as fellow species could potentially communicate in secret, it would add immersion as there would be some charcaters who you can't understand (there is a guy in my PA who won't learn Shirywook - I have to communicate in emotes and it is great fun) and finally, as this post is meant for, it would give the Protocol Droid a function.

Protocol droids could follow their owner around and relay what an alien species says in the owners native tongue.

Look at EQ...

Languages were a lot harder to learn in that than in this, but nobody used the other languages anyways, because of common tongue.

I totally agree... this has been brought up time and time again and I will chime in every time until the devs finally do something about it.

As I mentioned in another thread, during beta, Holocron actually said that he liked the idea of a 1 skill point cost for languages. So why it hasn't been implemented yet, I don't know. One can only hope that they're waiting until protocol droids are fully functional in that regard. Maybeinternaltestershaven't been able to get protocol droids to translate properly yet.

Wishful thinking, I know.

I dont get it why they even bothered with the languages and then made them so easy to learn. It's like designing lots of different droids, then adding a droid engineer profession who can craft those droids. But the droids would all have the same functions (that nobody would really need anyways) apart from those that have no function at all.

Sometimes I feel really sorry for the poor guys at SOE that worked for days or weeksto implement that stuff.

I know for myself that I will not spend skill points to learn a language.

I agree, Narak, it's darn shame... I think the language system is brilliant and has great potential, but with languages skills so easy to learn (and impossible to surrender), it's totally going to waste.

Well good, Nell--that's precisely the idea. Thus protocol droids that can translate would actually have a purpose in SWG.
