Due to a very long vacation from SWG I'm not up on how or what to do with Astromech droids. I've searched the stickies, but they simply mention levels. What I would like to know is what modules are necessary for these droids and what determines the levels (I'd assume that component level decides that). Also, I don't understand the unprogrammed data. I'd really appreciate a breakdown of what is necessary for these droids

Quick review:

Data module 1 installed in an astromech will give you a Level 1 Astromech which could be used pilot certified to use it, Data module 2 gives you a Level 2 Astromech and so on.

Unprogrammed modules are to be used to have be programmed by a pilot. They can hold abilities like Engine Overload and Capacitor to Shield Shunt so that pilots who don't know them could use them.

By astromech, I assume you mean pilot droids for rebel ships (since all other factions use flight computers). Some things to know:

* An astromech is simply an R2/R3/R4/R5 droid with a data module installed
* The data module level coincides with the Astromech certification level
* Unprogrammed chips are blank chips that pilots can put pilot programs on for other pilots to use (for instance, it allows rebel pilots to share their specific programs with neutrals or imperials)
* Unprogrammed chips are not required to use programs the pilot is already skilled in

For example: If you have an R5 droid with a Level 2 data module, it will only be usable by a pilot that is Astromech level 2 certified and up. The pilot can load up programs into the droid he/she is skilled in at will, but if the pilot wants to use other programs they are not currently skilled in, they can get chips with programs burned into them and load them up into the droid.

I see, so these unprogrammed chips are seperate from the droid entirely? And then the pilot wanting to program their astromech/flight computer just uses the chip to program it?

That makes things much clearer, thank you. Funny that only Rebels (and the odd quest ship) get astromechs. I'd have thought they would have been more common. Still, flight computers look much simpler to create and don't require the droid collar (if only I can find the blasted rare resources).

Thank you both for your help. I believe I understand now A couple of my real life friends can use some flight computers then, and I now know what I need to help them out.

Not necessarily. The chips are used ONLY if you want to use other pilot's programs. You can load up your own programs in the droid/FC until the cows come home. But the chips are one-shot deals.
