Any idea or plan that steers us away from a Droid Handler profession is welcome, in my book. There are aspects to this plan that I like... I proposed something similar waaaaay back in early September, and I'll repost it again here:

"My suggestion. Hear me out on this. Just like with vehicles are licensed and taxed by my great state of California, what about a "Droid Registration Certificate" that is directly linked to the type or class of droid employed. Example: in reality, if you purchased a 60,000 dollar SUV in the state of California, car registration costs an arm and a leg each year you claim you're using that vehicle. A whole series of certificates can be "purchased" from planetary governments for the "registration, tracking, and administration" of these droids. This could be a deed item that shows up in your datapad and resemble the way maintenance works for houses or harvesters. You could view the status of your registration, cancel or modify it at any time with the planetary government, add credits, etc... A mouse droid with a storage module in it might have a maintenance fee of 1 while the Advanced R4 with 110 Medical module would be right in the middle, and of course, the truly advanced combat droids would be the "SUV's" of SWG... a bit costly, but certainly manageable.

It could work just like vehicle registration works: you still own the property and may retain your droid indefinitely, but in order for you to use it, you must be "current" on your Registration. If you're not current with your registration of your droid, you simply can't use it. DE's should have a significant reduction in these fees, by the way, since they could be "subsidized" by the planetary governments.

This is a multifaceted fix: It will hopefully help DE's sell more goods (but SOE still needs to make droids truly useful), it will help remove more cash from the economy, it will prevent the wanton ab(use) of droids (ala Poke/\/\on pet situation we have currently). This could easily "fly" with the whole Star Wars saga since it's plausable that the governments might want to tax labor done by droids or something. (Additional note added by myselfon 09/11/03: Droid registration could be done through a galactic organization outside the GCW, perhaps along the lines of the Trade Federation in Episode 1. This would solve the question about Rebel playersnot having to pay registrationto an "Imperial" government). Win, win, win situation."

This could be modified to include resource requirements like you mentioned, so that a person would really have to work a bit more to upkeep his droids, instead of just throwing money at them.

All in all, another fantastic series of suggestions when compared to the utterly moronic DH idea!

Go to a Droid Engineer Trainer. 3 Levels of Certifications.

Light

Medium

Heavy

To get Light, you must spend 10 skill points, 10k credits, and 5k combat experience.

You must also have Ranged or Melee mitigation 1 to call (so only combat chars can use).

To get Medium, you must have Light, plus 10 more SP's, 50k credits, 20k combat experience.

You must also have Ranged or Melee mitigation 2 to call (same).

To get heavy, you must have Medium, 15 more skill points, 100k credits, and 50k combat experience.

You must also have Ranged or Melee mitigation 3 to call (same).

Anyone can use probots, clvl10 droids, the standard.

Light droids will be about clvl20. Mediums about clvl30, Heavy about clvl45.

To use a Heavy Droid you must spend 75k Combat xp,155k credits, and 35 skill points. (the numbers here can be altered).

Droids will be HIGHLY dependent on resources and experimentation, along with the use of dropped components (maybe be able to put dropped vibro pieces in melee droids and looted barrels in ranged?.... and Krayt Dragon Armor composite segments in the armor??).

This will make anyone pay for droid certifications (which will do nothing but give them a 'skill' of +1 combat droid use), will utilize trainers which are already implemented, and take credits and combat xp which is already implemented.

This system would be incredibly easy to program since it draws upon so many other already created systems. We can develop as complex of a system as we want, but it must draw upon other systems to be implemented. This would benefit DE's a lot more, keep balance, and would be a lot easier than developing a new profession.
