Hmm, let me tell you what I did till now (not master yet, mind you)
First grind with mouse droids to Blueprints II
That gives you decent R units.
Skill as of here: 0-0-0-2
Then get to crafting stations, Food/Chem seem the best sellers
Skill now: 0-2-0-2
More crafting stations, better med modules
Skill now: 2-2-0-2
Now you have a choice, blueprints 3 gives you R2s, but they need module sockets to put modules in, so I'd go for this first:
Skill now: 3-2-0-2
Then you have pretty ok medical, data and item modules, the ability to make clusters go for the next blueprints, or even go for master blueprints
Skill now: 3-2-0-4
Well, that's where I am now (apart from one in refinement, which does not much atm)
Good luck

My advice is to start stocking up on steel and fiberplast.
Once you hit Advanced Blueprints (or was it Expert? sorry but I can't logon right now to check) you can start grinding out Advanced Droid Frames for experience. They require 70 fiberplast and 150 steel per unit. As you may know, crafting yields 2x the units spent, so (70+150)*2 = 440 experience. Grinding out Advanced Droid Frames is the fastest way to advance in DE, in my opinion.
Regarding which "path" to choose, I'd say go up the Blueprints branch until you can make Advanced R2s, and then switch over to the Construction branch until you can make General Module Clusters. Then switch over to the 3rd branch until you can make food/chemical crafting modules, which are very popular with my customers.
Ever since the probot nerf, the droid configuration most requested by my customers has been (listed in order of importance):
- Food/Chemical crafting station
- Medical module (as high a level as possible)
- Advanced R2 or Advanced Surgical chassis
- Item Storage (as high a level as possible)
- Sarcastic or Worshipful personality chip
