DROIDS: A real purpose and a Star Warsy suggestion
In Star Wars, we saw droids translating for Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia not understanding Chewie, Han Solo understanding Chewie perfectly, etc.
In Star Wars Galaxies, everyone knows all languages.
I suggest the developers should consider allowingplayers the ability to learn only one extra (other than their native) language.
Players should not be able to speak and understand all languages... they would know their native language and one more.
The basic language would be understood by all.
Protocol droids would be purchased (different translation module ratings) to allow you to understand the languages that you chose not to learn and to understand various NPCs in the game.
Perhaps highest translation module would allow you to understand all languages through the use of your droid.
Once a day, players could "unlearn" a language and learn a different one(so you wouldn't be stuck with the extra language you chose; in case you didn't think it was useful).
Force sensitive players would be able to understand 2 extra languages (other than their native language), but would require a protocol droid to talk to various NPCs in the game.
At the very least, I suggest a lot NPCs should require a protocol droid for conversation (ie. such as Jabba, Bib Fortuna, misc. NPCs on quests).
Outcome:
You would understand basic, your native tongue, and one more language.
You may see a Zabrak, Rodian, etc.talking their native tongue to one another and not understand them. You would understand other species if you had aprotocol droid with a protocol module installed.
You may see space battles with onlygibberish coming across during battle unless you had a protocol droid.
Master Smugglers would be able to understand more (or all) languages.
This suggestion may also increase the Star Warsy feel of the game.

Great ideas, but I think one of the last times it was brought up the devs responded that they weren't going to screw with languages this late in the game... doesn't mean we can't try, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Don't especially like what we have now, with everyone learning all the languages a few minutes after creating a toon, but don't think that your idea will float either, sorry.
Reason being that if you were in battle for instance and wanted to understand the other side's commands? If they weren't talking in group chat, that is... you'd have to pull out a protocol droid? Naaah, besides the fact that if you can't pull out a droid after battle commences, if you had one out already, one hit and he's toast. And fan shots and spray shots would target him as well.
But that's just my opinion, and Hey! I could be wrong! :->

I like the idea, but it has been proposed before.
And the answer of the dev was something like : we do not have the intention to do something about languages anytime soon.
Truth is, there are more important stuff to do before, like for exemple fix the bugs.
