Thread: Another old idea brought up again: Translation module

Any chance we might see one of these pop up in our schematics with RotW? It's been brought up many times before, but wouldn't this be a real boon to new players who haven't learned all the languages?

...besides being a "classic" part of Star Wars...I mean anyone at SOE hear of C-3PO...

The droid itself wouldn't have to say anything, just when the player had it out all conversations around him would be converted to understandable text. This is the same as the way learned languages work now.In effect, the Translation modulewould temporarily (while the droid is out) give the player all languages.

I think the reason for this is the fact that it would defeat the purpose of everyone knowing all the languages. Granted, C3PO *was* a translating droid, but in the movies droids didn't need to be around translating everything for everyone. Afterall, anyone remember Han Solo's encounters with Greedo and Jabba? There were no translator droids for that.

I definatley understand the arguement for them, but I don't think they'd work in this game.

Ah, but you see Han is a smuggler - they get language skills for thier profession. For those who don't want to learn additional languages (or notfind anyone to teach them) a droid with a Translation module would be perfect. And theycould still learn languages later on if they wanted...

Just trying to give droids a bit more usefulness.

I have always been a proponent for this (or a similar) idea. Revamp languages so you either spend skill points to learn non-native languages or get a protocol droid to translate. You'd still be able to send /tells with no penalty, but spacial would adhere to this.

To answer this question, I shall point you to http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=dev_archive&message.id=42341&highlight=19+questions#M42341 target=_blank>this thread with this response:

Core Systems: Are there any plans to increase the "Star Wars" feeling in SWG by redesigning the current language systems to be more useful? This would allow droids like protocol droids to actually do something worth while, as well as give more useful skills to some professions like smugglers (underworld).>>

> >

There are no plans to address this currently. That is not to say we wont do that in the future, but the team is focused on more sweeping issues such as the Jedi Revamp, Smuggler Revamp, Combat Balance, Space, mini-publish and content mini-publish. There is a goal to improve the use of languages in the underworld smuggling skill tree with the revamp, but it’s more focused on the criminal and roguish elements rather than the more typical species languages.>>

Han Solo was a smuggler, so he had +100 to all languages

What i would like is quest that can only be obtained if you a) speak the quest giver language or b) have a translator droid!

And then they should add some NPC with a language nobody (besides smuggler who can magically understand all languages ^^) can speak or understand.

Have been there, smuggler can talk to them. But protocol droids are no help there.

And they are only junk dealer, no quest giver.
