Thread: Inflammatory. Unpopular. Left field. Go Droid Commander! :)
I absolutely agree with the DC profession idea -- but only as long as a droid commander does not require any DE skill. DC would be fun. DC would add droids to the landscape and to the battles. DC would be a drastic and interesting change. It could give lots of our customers reasons to spend more time and more money on droids, and most precious of all, more skill points. I can't tell you how awesomely proud I would be every time I heard that someone put some skill points towards the droid world.
Here are my personal reasons.
I don't give a crap about being able to use every one of my own droids, in the same way that my wsmith buddy's girlish tears have dried over the fact that he can't use a rocket launcher or a T21. I like being a CM and I wouldn't pick up any DC skills, but I have plenty of skill points to drop master medic and 4204 CM and work on DC if I feel like it.
Droids are already reliable sellers, and I don't have as much money as weaponsmiths or armorsmiths or architects, but I'm certainly comfortable enough to buy a million c's worth of meds -- all of that money from droid sales. (Certainly not from tips...)
Two of the arguments I've seen posited to avoid the DC route are "But I don't wanna spend MORE skill points" (so don't) and "It would limit our market" (thank goodness). Both of these arguments are attached to the DE profession, not to the droids themselves.
It's not like they are taking every droid we own and putting them in control of DC. High-end combat droids. A trusty probot would be good enough for me if there were droid stims. A probot with stims would be a first-class fighting droid, and should be available to all in present form. Anything higher should be reserved, and if DC is the solution SOE says they can do, then I say go for it. I want to see something happen, not just keep sitting by the sidelines with the rest of DE, saying no to this and but-but-but to that.
I want to see the SWG peopled, if you will, with droids. I want to see people releasing survey drones to return ("Battleship"-style) the concentration of a given resource at a given location -- if it's found at all. I want to see people cursing the survey drone that occasionally doesn't return. I want to see people's heads snapping around to examine the three terrifying droideka in tow by the Master DC. I want to see droids everywhere, but I want to share the love (i.e. with the DC brothers and sisters) and I want it done in a practical and expedient manner. Sooner is better.
What it comes down to is, I don't care about you. I don't actually care about the DE profession at all. Don't care whether Woody or RealTK421 live or die or go bankrupt. Quitting? Feel like your voice isn't heard? Don't care. I'd apologize but I don't think it is required, because I make no pretenses about what's important to me. Right now there is just one main thing that I care about seeing improvements to, and that is droids. In fact, I wish there were a droid forum instead of a DE forum -- because DEs aren't the only ones with vested interests in seeing great things happen to droids.
I wrote a long essay analyzing primary actors and secondary effects in SWG. I will not bore you with it, as I have plenty of other ranting here with which to bore you. What I realized was that a vibrant DE profession occurs naturally as a second order effect when you pay careful attention to the droids themselves as the primary actors of DE. Fix the droids in whatever way you feel like, SOE. As long as droids are given loving attention, droid-related professions will be wonderful to play.
Go Droid Commander, Go Droid Handler, Go Anything Droid-Related (except the new unimproved probot)! Keywords for me are "go" and "droid".
Aaaaand there go my chances of ever running for Droid-whatever Correspondant for the next thousand years
(I do like you guys on a personal level. Guys? Hello? Awww crap. *sigh*)

OMG! You are a gigantic egotist, Dough. And I love ya for it! Sign me up for Doughbacca's Cult of Personality. Get me a Doughbacca-Sytle Personality Chip for my Protocol Droid. ("Pardon me, sir, but let me just break it down for you. [insert lots of lines of text bubbles]")
Speaking of "heehee," next time you're in-game check out your char's visual emote animation when you say "heehee" -- too cheesy.
Oh, and, no to DH.
Anyway, regarding the continuity thing -- SWG is supposed to be fun, not proper. The game has people named Xena, Cooter, and Ra'God'of'All. If it were possible, they'd be skinned too.
The wild foment of player imaginations and a little devil-may-care content on the part of SOE are all that are needed to make the game endless fun.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't want to live the movies. I want a Star Warsy feel with great gameplay and a vibrant universe, continuity be demmed.

It'sgrowing...little by little. When Droidekas get into the game, we all have to drink some arsenic-laced droid lube (so we'll be ready when the asteroid comes topick us up).

They've been nerfed. They now only say...."Huh?" and "Wassat?"
