Thread: So much for new utility droids

Thunderheart said the following:

The trick is that there will be NO modules that "add bonuses" or enhance abilities. If the devs did that then we're getting back into the "extra checker" scenario. Further more, players can stack modules and start getting really unfair bonuses.

So, what is the point of new utility droids???

I don't think most of our ideas depended on enhancing abilities. Most of them were convenience things, though I'm not sure they want to give up the time sink that these stop either.

Actually, I great many of the ideas were enhancement ones - for example, the slicing possibilities, the mask scent enhancer, etc.

What I am seeing is that any practical benifit from droid is being looked at by SOE as a bad thing:

  • Convienience doirds - either remove time sink OR replace player abilities.

  • Enhancement droids - "unballance" the game

  • Combat droids - unbalance the game

This is so messed up....

I honestly don't think TH knows what hes talking about. He tries, but he doesn't get it. By what he just described, our current Lvl6 Med modules should be out of balance.

As for combat droids. For now, until a better solution than the "DH" idea comes up, I'd just like to see some new shells for the Probot with maybe some added abilities. Not added abilities like Dizzy/Knockdown, more HAM or more damage. I'd just like to see some abilities kinda like (but not cloning) the Scout/Ranger traps. Combat droid attacks target and targets melee or ranged defence goes down, or target has gets some generic status effect for a brief period of time. You can put that stuff on a timer so it can't be spammed by the droid.

I mean, right now people can still get CL10 creatures with poison or knockdown abilities. So why not CL10 droids?

Part of the problem is that the devs, and their spokeman in particular, are so combat-centric about everything.

We say we want useful utility droids (I know redundant) that will make droids ubiquitious in this incarnation of the Star Wars universe, and they say, ok, we'll do that, but they won't be useful.

Once again, if they had come into these boards months ago and said, hey, nice ideas, but they won't work, maybe we wouldn't have expectations for a what comprises a utility droid.

They do seem to be missing the basic point that:

Useful = adds to abilities or reduces tedium.

WE HAVE ALL THE ROLEPLAY TOOLS WE NEED NOW.

Someone needs to remind them that to make an omlet, you have to break the eggs.

You know what, I just don't get it.

If we're not allowed to have usefull droids that I have to ask, when the Devs made us what EXACTLY were they planning to have droids do?

All we want is to have what other crafting professions have. A usefull product that people WANT.

Have you guys seen the new Chef foods? Take a look..

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=chef&message.id=22022

I'm not saying nerf Chefs. They finally got a revamp they deserved, but what TH is saying is that our products aren't allowed to be usefull like other crafter's products. Just take a look at the abilities and bonuses of the new foods. They "give bonuses and "enhanec abilities" - exactly what TH said would destroy and unbalance the game.

Chefs are finally in line with other crafting professons. I'll now need Chef foods just as much as I need my Bio-Engineered clothing that gives me that Melee defence bonus and defence against Bleeds/Fire. I'll now need Chef foods just as much as I need spice to boost my HAM so I can take on the red mobs. I'll need it just as much as I need my Bio-Engineered CL10 creature to poison my targets. I'll need it just as much as I need my vehicle to be able to travel 3x the speed of any creature that I'm escaping. All the other crafting professions have these things that people WANT. Does it unbalance the game? Hell no. Does it add more variables and make the game interesting? Yeah it does.

Thats all we want is a product we can sell. Just look at what the other crafting professions provide and you can tell TH doesn't have a clue what hes talking about. Not allowed to give any bonuses or enhance abilities? Thats what crafters do! What does he think the other crafters make? Does he think people buy Chef food, Bio-Engineered clothing and Spice so they can Role Play better or something?

I never saw utility droids as being skill/stat enhancers, yeah except the med modules we already have.

I know there were some suggestions from the community for enhancers as possible ideas for new droid modules.

Most of the ideas were not ability enhancers, but 'action' enhancers - like a survey droid.

There are plenty of ideas for 'action' enhancer, not ability enhancer utility droids.

And it appears that these types of useful droids will take ALOT longer to implement than just adding a few combat droids.

TH post just said that they were not considering adding skill enhancing modules.

Nothing else.

"When Sony and Lucas set out, we said, How can we do this and not make another EQ? We didn't want it to be all about Luke, or combat, or lock our players into a class. So we created a system that would allow players to switch professions during the game, and there would be a lot of gameplay around making that change. If you want to go from architect to scout we've created a system to make that happen."

They've just been brought in line with other buffs and enhancers making them viable as a profession.

I actually think DE are a very unique profession compared to all the others.

They're practically the only profession that provide utility products.

And it WOULD be good to see that aspect of our profession receive more attention.

Chef products already were ability enhancers, but by TH's definition, this "breaks" the game. Any buff or stat enhancer, or BE clothing, or anything else is considered "free checkers" by TH, because it increases the players ability without having to "pay" for it ("pay" not in terms of credits, but skill points and time invested).

TH's logic is extremely flawed, and his argument does not hold water. By his argument, the game is already "broken".....

Bleh.
