Being totally depressed about the sad and demoralizing situation this profession is in, I decided to start a new shop and just use everything 'as is'. My first act was to review what 'is'. I did this from the perspective of a new player who might have some wonderful expectations about what droids do in this game. I then had a great idea. I would go find people who have never had a droid and knew nothing about them and offer to make them a new droid.
The sessions were sad indeed as I explained all the weird things that don't work, all the quirks that have to be understood, and the fact that there isn't much truly interesting about droids at this point. Then came the most sad part of all...the fact that the answer proposed by the purveyors of this game was to create a parallel mechanic whereby a new profession would be created like the CH resulting in a DE/DH pair just like the BE/CH that existed. A convenient 'solution' it would seem. Further, if we did not accept this, it would be months and months to consider anything else.
At this point, the new player who was thrilled with the concept of droids just asked me, "Can you just make me a shell to drop in my house so I can look at it and pretend that its something special?" To this I smiled and answered, "Sure...sure I can do that for you."

/sigh...
That's what this profession has become: "pretend that it's something special"

The argument about handler vrs no handler issue aside, you would think they would at least have theconcern tofix all the known broken things and add make what already exists worth having. It seems like they are holding all the fixes hostage to force the DE community to accept what they have. I see no reason why they cannot do things like making the existing Probot a little better....something akin to what a non-CH pet can be. Also they could then make the other combat droids like the existing Probot. Additionally, they should look at every one of the useless droids and make them useful at some level. This is the most overt act of negligence I have ever seen in a game system.

What is really sad is when I first got Novice Droid Engineer, I had no less thensix of my fellow Guildmates ask me flat out if I can make them R-Frames just so they can decorate thier home or vender. I said sure since its gives me xp and a few extra creds but is that all our profession has come to isa branch off architech where we just build fixtures for a home or building...
I hope not and I wait while still crafting my way to Master Droid Engineer hoping for some real use for my Title and Profession. I am glad I just made Master Artisan
because I can at least sell Speeders to make up for loss in sells for my droids.

You know, though....
I know quite a few peeps on my server who bought droids for their utility (e.g., food/chem and med R2's), but roll play them all the time.
To them, the droids are special - and that in and of it self gives me some happiness in the profession.
There is one lady on my server, Axesell, for example, who won't be seen anywhere w/o her trusty R2 unit, Rosie...

I talk to my droids...
... but I think that's more a case of failing sanity and inability to put up with the game much longer.
