Thread: Merchant Barker modules. Friend or Foe????

first off id liek to say that i think its great DE is finally gettign attention. As an MSL, who has been one since September, i know how much many of you are probably looking forward to any changes made to your proffession.


I just have one comment about the merchant barker modules that have been proposed for Publish 8.


Obviously none of you will know much until they actually get put onto test, etc but im just somewhat worried about the potential, and huge, amounts of spam that could happen with these. I doubt many of us go a day in the game without passing through a starport (coronet and theed anyone?) that is absolutely littered with AFK spamming and advertisements.


The cool thing is......you can add players to yoru ignore list who are spamming a paragraph message every 2 seconds. But what do you do about a droid that is spamming an advertisement every 10 seconds and cluttering up your chatbox? As far as i know there sno way to put a droid or NPC on ignore.


so my comment to you DE's is.....do you see this as a potential problem? and what are your comments on it?

Hopefully these will actually improve things. Hopefully barker modules will have time limits on how often they can bark, with limited information that can be initially shouted. To get more information you'd have to interact with the droid itself, which would only be displayed to that person similar to existing NPC conversations.

Hopefully that is what "through a radial menu command" means

I'd also like to bet that the droids will be subject to power consumption for barking, like almost every other action is, so an afk player's droid would soon stop barking due to not having a battery

I can see it now, my new profession of Droid Recharge-man. Running around outside the Coronet Starport recharging all the SpamBots withtrusty ol' Gonk, for a fee of course .


Replacing one spam for another... "Gonk charge", "Gonk charge", "Gonk charge".....

We've already discussed ways to circumvent the spam problem. We had some good discussion threads on this back on 2-19. I personally like my idea:



"Havea little circle "i" floating above the head of the droid, maybe a different color than NPC's.


Customerapproaches the droid, left clicks and gets a radial menu.


Radial menu has the option "What am I offering?"


Select that option and the droid begins it's little speech."


Additionally, instead of spatial, the droid could /tell the browser the information.

I like this, though I think 'the little circle I ' should be more like an oblong box with , say 25 characters customizable...I like it except for the /tell


It has to be mail..


Reason 1...its likely to be long


Reason 2... Who can deal with /tell in coronet or anywhere else that is busy.


Make the droid mail the client, just like you would....it makes sense that way

There's also the location issue that must be considered. It's pretty annoying when someone parks a pet, droid, or their AFK selves right at a starport entrance to spam ads. A particular problem is named pets/droids for which there's no way to /ignore.

i got bitched out today because i had my adbot...err my powerful probot...circling an NPC in Bestine saying that i was buying his rewards.....


anyway.....some of us the game are REALLY REALLY REALLY sick of the spam....it seems to make you load ibto some cities much slower than others...you see the same toon spamming the same crap day after day. i already REFUSE to ever go to coronet again.


my gut feeling is that thisreally bad idea....


i just picture the ticket droid surrounded by adbots 24/7
