Posted this in GCW and In-Concept forums. Wanted to hear the DE response to it ^^

Ok this is a flight of fancy but...

What if Droids were playable? This is how I think it would work.

Every player starts as a MSE Droid. They can then go around doing little MSE droid based missions and Delivery quests and such. They can then go to a Droid Engineerand have their Droid Brain/Memory Core installed into a different Chassis.

Each Chassis would have different abilities, and act as a pseudo Professions

Battle Droids would be Marksman-esque

Super Battle Droids would be Carbineers

Droideka would be Commandos

Probots would be Ranger/Rifleman

Protocol Droids would be Merchants

R2 Units would be Smuggler-esque

Medical Droids would be Medic/Doctor

Binary Load Lifters could be a type of Mining Profession

Those Treadwell Droids (with all the spindly arms ^_^) could be Architect/Tradeskill Profs.

IG-88 type droids as Bounty Hunters

Power Droids as a Droid Healer

Being a Droid would cost 250 Skill Points (a la Jedi). Each chassis would have its own set of Skill Trees. Obviously, each droid wouldn't 100% emulate the original Profession. Some abilities would not go to the droid, while the droid also would have its own unique abilities.

When a Player switches a Chassis, it would be like surrendering ALL of the skills you just learned, and you would have to start from scratch if you went back to an old chassis. As such, Droids would only be able to own one type of Chassis at a time.

DE's would also be given a support role as an in-combat Droid Healer. This would also give DE's a more stable market, as Droid PC's would come to them for parts, upgrades, healing, and new Chassis'.

I forgot to mention, this is ON TOPof everything a DE can do now and will be able to do in the upcoming Publishes.

No, no depressioning (is that even a word:smileytongue here. Not a DE myself, honestly, but love the droids. I want to be able to play a Droid. I want DE to have a much higher purpose than what they are now, and even higher than what you'll be getting in the future.

Actually I think a Droid Race would quell alot of DE vs. DEV fighting. DEV's will be happy for adding more content (new race) and DE's will be happy for being given yet ANOTHER aspect to their gameplay.

Don't worry. It's all gravy baby

Well... I have actually wished I could play as a droid. But to start as an mse? No. I would want to start as a droid type that was anthropomorphic. That means protocol, repair, surgical, roger-roger, or battle droid... hey there's a use for those new meshes they didn't implement. I don't think I would ever choose to start a character as a MSE... they don't even have manipulator arms!

Other than the choice of beginning chassis, playing as a droid should be very similar to playing as one of the other races. You'd still pay for skills... you'd still buy your armor and weapons... maybe those would be a special type, like clothing for wookies is, but still something you buy. It would make it necessary to increase the number of items in the game, because food for example wouldn't do a droid any good... a droid would therefore have to have an equivalent to food... and so on. Droid food, droid buffs, droid armor, droid weapons... maybe that's why the devs haven't implemented it. Because it would complicate the game too much.

The idea does have merit, but I wouldn't want to see it implemented in the way you specified.

What is it about my idea that doesn't work? Not a flame, just a question. I want feedback from DE's, since they would be directly affected by this were it to ever come into being.

And the MSE droid is just a literal incarnation of the idea of starting small, and working your way up to something bigger.

Well, the most glaring problem in my opinion is that your scheme does not allow for someone to fill several roles, like all the species currently in existence do. That is, if I have a medic/doctor droid character, he cannot also be a BH character, because to get the BH skills he would have to give up the medical chassis and get the bh chassis... So what do we do with people who want to play as a BH droid with medical skills? No one is likely to choose a species that only lets them do one kind of thing at a time. I like to take a day or two off from crafting and go shoot something every once in a while. Couldn't do that if I was one of your droids. It would be much better to be a humanoid droid, able to do any of the professions by purchasing skills the same way everyone else does.

As for starting out as an MSE... I think I already voiced why I wouldn't like that. No arms.

Also, this idea would require giving DE skills equivalent to image designers, which is a whole elite profession, in order to enable them to do this moving of your core into another chassis. In effect they would be giving you a new body. Not that I would object to this, but I might object if I were stuck in an MSE chassis and couldn't find a player to upgrade me... once again it would be better to have started as a humanoid droid, and never need to change chassis. Or at least let the choice of chassis be completely optional. Or maybe if all you needed to do to change chassis was to purchase a new chassis and give a command to move yourself into it. But even then, I'd never choose to be an MSE.

Next problem is the fact that you want people to give up entire skill sets just to improve/change their character. As it stands with the currently available species, this is sometimes necessary, but even then it is not necessary to give them all up at once. You can keep doing what you're used to until you learn the new skills. Your scheme would require them to all go at once, which could spell economic disaster for the player in question.

These are just the problems I see on the surface. I'm sure there are more I haven't even thought of, but would If they implemented it as is and I tried it...

I love this idea. However, I don't see it happening any time soon if ever. I'm also a Commando, and I think that they have enough sense to attend to our incredibly broken proffession (Commando)before doing something like this.

And even then, they won't do that until they finish the important job of giving the extremely common and popular Image Designer more lip colors to choose from. God forbid that the crowd of thousands of players don't get their lips colored a darker shade of blue.
