so any rating on a lvl 6 will hold 10 items? ive stacked 2 lvl 4's with a rating of 7 each (totalled rating 15 ??) for 10 items, but i want to be sure a, say, rating 11 on a lvl 6 will hold 10 items?

You are correct. ANY level 6 will give you ten items storage. Anything rated above that is a waste because 10 is the most any droid will.

Until I figure out how to get a backpack on my protocol droid anyway ;-)

You can get 10 items out of a Lv6 module or a reasonably experimented set of Lv3 and Lv4 modules (1 each).
