It would be better if they dont need to group at all, imho.
Its a waste of time to have to call a droid/pet and then issue a command to group.
They could implement something like sub-groups, where pets are grouped with the owner automaticly and dont count against the player group limit. Of course they would need to fix the CL issue, that when you group with a droid/pet that has a higher combat level than you it gets pulled down to your level.
Besides that i see not much that would speak against a auto-group...

I like this idea. I wonder if a group of 8 MCH could go out along with eight CL 70 pets?

Here is an idea to float, maybe to get passed on to the devs.
Make "pet slots" in a group, 8 total. Those 8 slots don't count towards the regular group maximum. This would help Droids a lot as well as CH's. We have many modules such as Auto Repair and Stimpack Dispensers that work best in a group, yet very rarely is there ever room for a pet in a group, especially multiple pets. This really hurts CH's because it makes it very hard to use their pets.
The 8 slots wouldn't belong on a one per person basis, it would just be 8 total, so each person could use a pet if they wanted, or in the case of a CH, he could use 3 pets, but 2 other people wouldn't get any.
I do think that screen clutter would be an issue, so we wouldn't need to see all the pets Health and such for the group on the screen. There are many solutions, here is one. Just put a "pet icon" and it's name next to the controller. Have that icon change color according to how much damage it has taken. For example green = 50% Orange = 25% Red = 10% that way there would be an indicator of it's current health.
This would allow pets to group, and their "grouping functions" such as auto-repair to work together, yet not add a lot of screen clutter.

Yep, this idea has been thrown around in the CH forums for a while. I think they could make this work, and it makes droids/pets viable group members again.
