Well, it seems they are better than they were.

Maximum Combat Level is 30 with the armor effectiveness dropping from 7k+ to 1217 which is roughly the equivalent of a Level 30 Bio Engineered pet which they also changed a few publishes ago.

They changed the Droids somewhat in Publish 18 so that combat effectiveness cannot be improved on by experimenting. To get a Level 30 droid at present just involves adding a single combat module (no need to add more now) and a Level 4 armor module. Although a Level 6 is suggested if you are hoping for a retroactive fix to droids and the armor effectiveness.

They changed the grouping system which also affected pets including droids. Now if you are lower level than the droid it is best not to group with it so that its better defenses are used when it fights (making them ideal for non combat players). But, if you are higher and the droid groups with you it will benefit from your defensive level as grouping makes everyone be the equivalent of the highest level player in the group.

Be aware though that if you prefer high xp for combat the droid is best used in emergencies as the more damage the droid does the less you do and thus the less xp you get.

Hope that helps you, if not I'm sure the others will be able to offer more insights.

Also, many PvPers (is that a word?) have healing in their template, and the med-rated 110 droids give a significant boost to heals.

As for what the best combat droid is, it depends onwhether you want a ranged attack. If you want a ranged attack you need an AdvancedProbot (ranged attacks are currently broken for the other droids). If ranged is not a priority, the R3 with 1 more module is the best bet. So its a tie between

Advanced R3: Combat Level 30, Med110, 4 Auto repair (~9-10 regen/second) or;

Advanced Probot: CL 30, Med 110, 3 auto repair (~6-9 regen) with a ranged attack

As the previous poster stated, HAM and armor cap out at CL 30, this applies regardless of the chassis.
