About allowing Master Droid Engineers to craft a datapad that a msg could be typed out on. Kinda like when you examine someone and see their bio. The current in-game email system makes this rather unnessesary, but from a roleplaying standpoint the idea of being able to leave a datapad msg for your buddy on his workbench since he wasn't home when you stopped by is kinda interesting. For those that are really into rolepaying you could have a spy that is working on finding the weaknesses to a faction's base. After he has found his information he could leave a note for the opposing faction to find in a "safe house" that details when the base usually has the least amount of defenders. Or what about turn-coats? They leave a msg for him in another "safe house" detailing when they are planning to attack. He then makes sure that he is ready to sabotage the defensive efforts when the attacking force shows up by hurling grenades from behind into the midst of the defenders or something.

I think something like that would be great. There's been more than a few times I wished I had something like this that I could use a 'droid manual' for some of the droids I've made for my customers. That and one that you could use as sort of a personal journal. Something to jot down names of business contacts, keep a list of regular customers and their regular orders and just personal notes.

For what it's worth, a craftable data disk with a custom (editable?) message is one of the top items requested by the events team.

I personally think that this type of a data disk should be craftable by anyone -- just like now in RL realistically anyone can grab a piece of paper and write stuff down. Perhaps novice artisan skills and a generic crafting tool would be enough for this item.

The challenge is that this feature is not on the schedule, and the events team (Pex) has little ability to insert specific player items into the schedule.

I brought something up like this about 8-9 months ago in a series of threads gear towards throwing out player ideas to the DEVs. What it consisted of was the use of the Data Terminal, crafted by an Architect, and a multi-use data disc, crafted by an Artisan. The Data Terminal would allow a player to create a text file amd then store the text onto the data disc. The data disc could then be inserted into a droid with a new Data reader module and the data on the disc could be transfered. This would be a great RP feature, based on the idea of using a droid to smuggle data, much like was done in ANH. The data disc could also be used in conjunction with the Entertainers Playback module, allowing the performer to store multiple peformances.....Take a look
here
for the fleshed out idea that was posted.

This is, of course, a great idea and one that I think would be used (not a ton, but used).

If were going to devote whatever limited Dev time we might get on such things, would it be better (from an RP tools standpoint) to try to shoot for the addition of the "Holographic Projection Recorder/Play module"?

Some of those Holo-emotes that the ID's got look like the beginning of what could a super cool (and desired) droid function.

It's unclear, however, whether this could be done in a way this feature would be anything BUT and RP tool, which is what always concerned me.

The premise of the idea above is the same. How could be setup to be cool/fun for non-RP folk? Or is that even viable for such a feature?

This doesn't have to be a droid thing. In fact I think it would be better if it wasn't. In my shop I have about 8 bookshelves all lined up with different titles: "A Dummies Guide To Droids", "Droid Programming" etc. ("Playwookiee")

One of the things that I really enjoyed in Ultima (uh oh) was the involvement of the community in things that had nothing to do with the game. People (can't remember which prof.) could craft blank books that anyone could write in. These could then be left on bookshelves, tables etc for people to read, without fear of them being stolen.

I remember buying several *good* stories from one person who roleplayed an Author character. They were only short stories but I could then put them on my shelves for my customers to read.

Think of the possiblities here. Droid Guides, Custom Droid Price Lists, Novels, A Guest List anything.

You are too cruel. It's like talking about ice cream in front of a four year old, and then not giving him any...just leaving him standing there with his mouth watering. Meanie.

Personally, I would *LOVE* the idea of "disposeable" message droids... Actually, not disposeable... Make reusable up to a certain point, until their memory needs to be totally wiped before you get memory leaks or somesuch - like scrambled messages from previous messages... (How many folks remember those Ni-Cad batteries, and their charge/memory leaks, in in how it seemed to loose the amount of stored charges after a period of time). Maybe like the Seeker/Probe type models. Cheap, disposable/recycleable.

Or be like "Impossible MIssion" where it self-destructs after a certain amount of time, or be like those Message Owls or Howlers from "Harry Potter".

Compared to having about 200+ emails in my email box... This would help cut down the clutter. Maybe.

Sorry

There were many many things I enjoyed about Ultima that would work in SWG too. I just felt the need to mention some of them (Especially since some of the devs came over from UO themselves...)

I have a way this could be non-RP. Make it a package delivery droid. The holographic image could be used by DE's (as one example of non-RP use) to describe how to use the new droid that is being delivered. Or, to say thanks for soliciting your services. Or, they can be delivered with no item inside and be solely used for RP purposes or message delivery.

The package delivery droid would appear right next to the person they're delivering to, the next time they log in - or, when they go to one of their houses and select "check mail." The droid'sitem storage area would contain the items to be delivered. These delivery droids would be one-time use droids (like seekers or something).

I think it'd be easier for people to use droids to deliver things to each other, rather than relying on person-to-person trading all the time, or using vendors. It would also enable folks who DON'T have Merchant skills to destroy their vendors, and still use delivery droids to give stuff to people when they need to, with waiting around for them or going to find them.
