I dislike these kinds of "wishlist" posts/threads because it seems like it takes away from the existing game. However I was just thinking this.
First off several of us seem to dislike the idea of "astromech/utility" droids being used for combat. Im one of them, seeing an R2 or R3 with a lightning bolt thing seems a little "off". The existing schematics should have droids doing what they were designed for.
I wish the DE had for one of its trees a "jury rig" set of skills. So you have your standard droid engineer making R2/R3's that are useful crafting droids, LE repair droids repairing etc. But like a Smugglers slice you can also develop a "set" of skills that allow you to "alter" existing schematics. (Sorry Im a huge fan of the quotation marks).
So lets say you take your existing LE Repair droid. You want to make him more melee oriented. You take a melee weapon of some sort, and attach it. But in doing so the frame is altered. He can develop some sort of "defect" if you will as a result. Creating a "decay" of the droid. Its random, like a slice, for what might happen. Who knows, maybe you want to take your LE and attach a ball and chain, for instance, and weld a few extra armour plates to him. Now his speed is reduced, lets say, but his HAM is higher, and maybe takes on a surly kind of attitude, where he says "No" when you tell him to attack or something. Star Wars droids always seem to me like they had a "personality". Luke wanting R2 in his Xwing even though its a little battered because "that droid and him have been through a lot together!"
I dont know, Im at work and should be working cept all my work is done!

Hehe just kidding, however, we will likely never be able to modify droids once built.
