Thread: I really don't know what I expected from SWG... *sigh*

/sigh

I had a feeling that there would be some major "tweaking" in the works when I saw that this publish sequence was advertised as a "product line revamp." This is one reason that I refuse tooperate inthe DE profession... until it all settles out.

If any of you saw my earlier posts, you will remember that I never said "I quit".. only that I was "taking a break... until things stabilized..." -- and I am STILL gonna wait for that stabilization, even if it takes a full month (or more) of watching everyone else rant and rave.

/setRantOn

I don't know what I really expected from SWG. I suppose that I had "hoped" that this would be a quantum leap forward in MMORPG philosophy and technique. What I see is what others have already described... a "hack-n-slash" Fantasy Role Playing Game (FRPG) in a different set of clothes. I guess I came into SWG expecting to build droids thatepitomized the utilitarian functionality of those droids to whichI was introducedin 1977 -- Yes.. UTILITY was what droids provided to their masters. What SWG appears to be focusing on, and what an LARGE number of DEs seem to want, are droids that do NOT fit the overall theme of Star Wars, as it existed between Episodes 4 and 5 (our CURRENT timeline).

I dont blame my fellow DEs. Our profession has been forced to this by the overall design of a combat-oriented FRPG dressed in Star Wars clothes. I didnt squawk when I saw a Probot being used a a combat unit, although the sight of it made me a bit "queasy". I didnt squawk when I saw a DZ70 being used as a combat unit. I didnt squawk when I saw genetically engineered combatant creatures... and it was THEN I realized that this game had VERY little in common with Episodes 4 & 5 of the original Star Wars Trilogy. But when I saw that the Devs, in their infinite wisdon, decided to make UTILITY droids into combatants (R2s, R3s, LEs AND MSEs), my stomach actually rebelled and I became physically ill. I nearly quit the game and went back to Asheron's Call (Dark Majesty).

However, my love for anything Star Wars, ANYTHING at all, forced me to remain.

/setRantOff

So... here I sit... waiting to see what else the Dev's think is "good for their premier FRPG in Star Wars Clothes"... waiting to see what other "features" will be issued for the DE profession ... in the vain and futile hope that it will somehow resemble the films that I came to know and love.

Should Sony and Lucas Arts be worried? (15000 users * 5 accts = ~$13MIL in potential lost gross annual revenue) If I were the CEO for either LA or SOE, I would certainly be worried.

Well, I'd just like to note something about the hack'n'slash style gameplay you describe; Is there any other game with an as interesting crafting system? Resource hunting, stat matching, experimenting (even though DE's are mostly immune to that =P ).

Granted, most of the time I played AC I was a gimped war mage, but I tried my a few tradeskills. That game didn't really leave an option for "pure" tradeskilling the way SWG does.

DE issues aside, I can't say I'd really describe it has a hack'n'slash with a a new skin...

Your points are well made. But you got alot to learn about /Ranting. LOL. That was tame.

I concure with your points on what droids mean to SWG vs what they mean to Star Wars. I am sickened everytime I wander thru the starports and see half the players toting Mystical Mauls... I mean Power Hammers. What are so many melee weapons doing in a SF Adventure?

Your points on Droids being mis-used is further compounded by the demographic of your average DE. As you stated, you love everything Star Wars, as to most of your fellow DEs. This is a profession populated, more so than any other, by people who love SWs more then MMPORPGs.

I am sure the staff at SOE curses George L. every day for spoiling their Everquest Clone with Droids. Droids just don't translate from the run of the mill fantasy game that SWG is modeled on.
