Thread: The best balanced combat droid?

So I was just comparing the combat capabiltiesof the Probot with the Advanced R3 because I've heard that some people like to have that extra HAM in the Adv R3 as a better tank and was wondering if it was really worth it.Basically, what is a good"middle of the road" combat droid? Not all defenselike the R3 w/ 5auto-repair or the Advanced LE with 2 auto-repairs and not all offense like a probot with 5 combat modules.I've come to the conclusion that an advanced probot with 4 auto-repairs might fit the bill. Anyone care to comment? Here a few numbers used in my consideration:

A 3200 HAM probot with a single 100 rated combat module does:

110-116 damage at an attack speed of 0.75 and a 41% chance to hit. Not counting armor/resists/dodges/etc., this works about to an average DPS of about 62.

A 4500 HAM R3 with 6x100 rated combate modules does:

160-170 damage at an attack speed of 1.50 and a 41% chance to hit. This works out to a paltry 45 DPS!

The single combat module probot does 38% more damage than a fully loaded Adv R3! You could put 4 auto-repair modules in the probot and still have higher DPS than a 600cr R3. With 19per auto-repair module, that works out to 76 per tic, or 456 per minute. If damage was being done to the probot in a single pool, it would take 2.85 minutes to make up the 1300 difference in HAM between the probot and R3. If damage was even across all three HAM, it would of course take three times that, or about 8 1/2 minutes. (By this, I mean until 1 pool reaches 0 and the droid is incapacitated.) Practically speaking,it would probalby fall in between somewhere, let's saya nice round 5minutes of auto-repair timeto makeup the 1300 HAM difference. In any case, in general, it seems the the best "middle of the road" attack/defense would probably be an advprobot with 1 combat and 4 auto-repairs as opposed to something like an R3 with 6 combat or 5 combat and an autorepair. Over the long run, the probot would do more damage and last longer with less down time.

Comments?

there is no "balanced" droid that can be exactly centered between these two extremes. But one thing that can be done is an R3 with 3 auto repair and 3 combat, but it would only be useful en masse as with any combat droid.

Actually that is some good information. I have always reccomended the Probot is you want killing done. Then an Auto-Repair (Tank) R3 if you want a Tank.

Your post shows that for a medium between them, a Probot with auto-repair does have a place. So I agree with you.

However, let me talk about why I wont stock or reccomend that Droid.

The ONLY reason you want a "Tank" droid is because you want it to live while YOU kill. The Auto Repair is great, but could be replaced with Droid Stims. The best part about a TANK droid is that it doesn't do much damage, so it doesn't take your xp.

Now people use a Probot because they want something killed. Simple as that. Probots kill the best. These make the best bodyguards and assault droids. Very usefull to people without any combat skill or very little.

Where would your "Tank Probot" fit in? What would be the market? Either I want something killed or I don't. Either I want to kill it myself or have the Droid do it. There may be a small niche area for that Droid, but it is nothing that a full Probot and some Droid Stims can't fix.

Don't get me wrong, I liked your post, it was informative. It just wont change my sales plans for Combat Droids.

For a pure crafterwith no ground combat ability who wants a bodyguard type droid I always recommend a full combat probot (3200 HAM/549 combat) and use droid stim Ds. Autorepair is nice after a fight, but unless itsteamedupwith another droid or 2, not very useful in combat.

This gets the damage up to 181-191 at .75 spd. There are many many mobs that such a probot can handle with stims, especially if you just need to clear a path to your harvs.

Great comments. Not sure if there is much of a market for such a droid. I know I have an alt who is a master doctor/tk and while I don't usually need or even want a droid, there are times when I wish I had some of the damage of a probot in a configuration that stood up to beatings longer. Because invariably during the course of fighing with the droid, he get's attacked and I don't want to run over to him and heal him until after the battle, and I'd rather never heal him at all. So with that character, I would probably buy a droid like the one described just to see if it met my play stylebetter. More of a convenience than anything, so I wouldn't have to heal himmuch or ever. After trying him, I may decide to stick with full combat probot(which is what he has right now, and it of course works very well.)Some "nice to have" damage in a self-maintaining package so to speak. I might put a few on my vendor just to see what happens.

Cheers.

I don't bother with the auto-repair modules. They only really work well for my customers in large groups, and most people just don't group these days, let alone group with enough organization for everyone to get an auto-repair droid.

I've taken them out in the field, and I just don't see their value. They only tank a bit longer with them (even good ones), unless you are out there killing durni's or kreetles. Occasionally I get a request for one, but they just aren't worth my stocking all the time.

The best use of our combat droids these days is as extra-firepower, and that they excel in. A well-constructed Probot has the same firepower as having an extra FWG pistol, which adds a great deal of offense.

In my experience, if you can afford to buy things at my shop, you are past the point where an auto-repair droid is useful to you.

AO, you may want to reconsider. You and I are of pretty much the same business sense, and I sell a ton of Tanks, here is why.

Many low level professions, including new Jedi love them. Let's use the Jedi example, no Armor, a weak saber, and you can't hunt with friends. When I die it hurts, there is a penalty.

Now I could use a full combat droid, but it would actually do more damage then I would with my low level saber. So that is out. Now I could hunt alone, but as soon as I hit a lair, I get a lot of angry monsters after me. With no armor, this is a problem.

A TANK droid is perfect. I send it in first, or I have it hit the lair. The monsters are mad at it, so I kill the monsters. Yet with only 1 combat module, he doesn't take much xp from me.

Sure solo, auto-repair may not be as good you you may want, but it helps. The only cost is batteries, which really isn't a big deal, especially with them lasting longer. Stims could do the same Job, but thi way you don't need to worry about the droid.

I sell quite a few Tanks, they are worth stocking. After the CU they will be worth it more.
