Let's use them like the movies do. As a translator.

Here's what I mean. It is way too easy to learn languages in this game, and eventhenyou don't get any xp for teaching some one a language. So....if a wookie wants to talk to Mon Cal, then he needs to buy a protocol droid, or he needs to go to a local cantina and use a protocol droid there. The droids could work like acrafting station. If you are within 5-10 meters of one, you are able to understand the languages that are programed into it.

Now, that being said, when a DE creates a protcol droid he will have to have data disks or dictionaries to insert into the droid. These dictionaries could be from the artisian tree or master artisian, and can be added to the droid in the future. Or for that matter, the entertainers could be able to provide them, since they are more of a communicator/people class. For the more difficult languages (ie wookie) they would have to be higher up the food chain.

Might have been a good idea, pre release, but by now, almost everyone has learned all the other languages. For that matter, except for Wookies, how often does anyone speak their native language any way? Very seldom do you see a messge in a chat box that so and so said somethning in Bothan or any of the other languages. Everyone speaks the geneal language most of the time.

There are explicit commands to speak in a language that you know. Ctl-A to see what they are.

I wish they had done something to prevent the easy spread of language learning so early on in the game...it would certainly add an interesting element if you either had to have a translator or actually spend some time to acquire a language 'cert' in order to talk to certain people.

I agree with the language thing. It's not too realistic or starwarsy for everyone to understand everyone else. But with the way it is, if someone shouts about not understanding someone, 3 people dive at him/her with an invite ready to teach everything.

The other problem is that a simple /tell solves the communication problem anyways. One day, I met a girl that said she couldn't understand me. I sent her a /tell asking if she would like to learn Shyriiwook, and she refused, saying that she liked the atmosphere and realism of not understanding everything said at all times. I thanked her for being who she was, and congratulated her on her love of RP, sent her a /deepbow, /waved, and went on my way.

It's people like that who make me proud of RPing, because they refuse to use a system that takes away from the experience.

I recently found the code on one of these forums for unlearning a language. I'm seriously considering it. Only problem is that I'm a wookiee...it does me no good to surrender any speaking languages, and I would keep basic comprehension, which everyone speaks anyways. It seems that even in trying to RP, I'm still foiled by the system.

Real Uses for Protocol Droids:

Translators - you choose "Translate" from the Radial Menu, and the droid will automatically translate anything spoken around you in languages you don't understand.

Ad Barkers - Merchants should be able to program a message that the Protocol Droid can repeat as they follow a Patrol Route (or standing still).

Messengers - Protocol Droids can perform messenger/delivery functions, like those I described in a recent thread about MSE Delivery Droids.

Well, just a thought from a real in-game purchase made by one customer. She had me craft a Protocol ADV chassis for her so it could be named the way she wanted it to be named. The name she had me put on it was "Boytoy" and it now resides in the bedroom of her residence. No joke! This was a real order placed by a real customer! I was laughing so hard I could barely craft the thing.
