Generally I don't post message like this. However, I felt that I could not contain my frustration as to many points of my beloved profession...
I'm a Master Bio-Engineer and Master Droid Engineer on Wanderhome. For a couple of years before the release of SWG I followed the boards, posted on guild fora, etc, eagarly anticipating the DE profession. I could hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of making and customizing droids in a Star Wars environment...
As most of you know the first 10 months or so of droid engineering was hell. There was very little customization or variety. No one really needed a droid.
Things have improved but not much. I have run into several hard brick walls in my life as a droid engineer.
I'm not a Master Artisan: I never wanted to be one. However, this should really besomewhere in game as a warning to new DEs. You need Master Artisan to craft components for advanced droids! I can make only a few simple droids on my own, even as a master DE because I don't have master artisan. I am forced to buy crates of components from artisans ahead of time. This can be extremely inconvenient.
I can't use the droids I make; This is frustrating and makes little sense. I built it but I don't know how to use it. This makes it particularly difficult to answer questions from potential buyers. "How much damage will this exploding mouse droid do?" "Gee friend, I don't know, you have to be a smuggler or bounty hunter to use it and I am neither." I can't think of a single reason why I can't use these droids. For that matter, the professional restrictions on many items baffle me. Why can't a commando use chemical weapon grenades like a combat medic? They're just grenades. For that matter, why can't a demolitionist use an exploding droid?
Droids aren't necessary to gameplay: That's right - no one really needs a droid. I can make a good combat droid, but it will cost someone 40-80k depending on the model. I can charge someone 15k for a non-ch creature of slightly lesser ability (and they can mount that). No one has reason to buy my combat droids other than a sheer love of droids. The recent changes only add a small amount of variety to our sales simply because of all of those professional restrictions. Ever heard of an owner's manual? Why can't a character use these droids!? Why!?
Most experimentation is futile!!!: I don't mean the game experimentation bars. I mean that if I cluster a bunch of storage modules I can never have more than 10 item storage in a droid of any kind (including the BLL which makes no sense either). Some experimentation works and makes little sense (an R3 droid being better for combat than an Advanced Probot) but experimentation that would make sense does not (putting a turret on a BLL is impossible). Why is SOE trying to inhibit the creative minds of today's Droid Engineer?
When it comes down to it I rarely use the DE profession. I make all of my money Bio-engineering and have little use for DE. I will be dropping it soon and taking up either Merchant or Chef. This is a great disapointment to me as I have always wanted a working Droid Engineer with plenty of immersion into the star wars universe.
I am constantly sadded by the fact that SOE seems only concerned with making a game loosely, visually associated with star wars and completely unassociated with science.

amen brother
I really enjoy being a DE but that's not to say the profession isn't without a number of flaws, bugs, oversights and incongruities, it would be nice most of all to have something to build that people *need* to have.
Roll on JTL & DC I say, may the DE become the most beloved profession of all SWG!
Feeling your pain but looking forward to a brighter future.

Grenn-the-Robe you speak out of my heart.
I wanted to be a DE since i started to play SWG. I am Master Artisan so one problem ( the components ) i have solved.
But the really need of droids is like you said.
Combatdroids? To much ressources ( meaning a high price without a really effective result )
And as i think to much special ressources are needed. For to much little stuff.
Also about the repair and reconstruction kits i am not happy i choose the DE profession not medic. This DroidStimPack building is going me on the nerves. Why is there a repair module and i dont mean the auto-repair module.
Or make this Repair and Reconstruction Kits easier to craft not so complex, the droids are complex enough.
I will stay DE but right now i make my money out of my fighting profession. I hope for a good future for the DEs.
