I'm a master DE, havent' done much with combat.
But recently, I've been taking my Combat probot out with me to get 'out of the house', so to speak. I've been sucessful having him tank (taking all of the hits) while I took pot-shots at the mob. So, eventually, as you can guess, my guns have gotten better and my damage has greatly increased, but now the mean monsters turn to me as soon as I start hitting him with 500+ damage.
What is the best way to let our droids tank?
I generally let the probot start, then I start attacking, but that doesn't always work.

Heres how I do it.
Hotkey a pack of droid repair kits
Never let your probot get incapped
Have it attack (and do damage) first
Always try to stay behind it.
Have /tellpet hotkeys for commands, they work at longer ranges
With this method if you dont have much time to play like I do, you can take down a few wild spineflap nests or wild shaupaut hunter lairs for tens of thousands of weapon xp without going to get buffed. If you are melee use an LE-Repair. Since the mobs go after melee, theres a better chance the repair droid will get attacked also.

Mobs will usually attack whoever is doing the most damage to them. Your droid can still take the aggro for you and that way you only have to deal with one creature attacking you instead of the entire lair. And use a melee droid instead of ranged.

OK, since I'm doing this too, for Rifleman, when you say melee droid. . .are there droids out there that just do melee attacks?

I'd switch to a different tank. Then you can avoid that pesky problem of "Hey!My probot's running the wrong direction!"

Probot is ranged only.
R2/3/4/5 are melee/rranged.
LE Repair is melee only.

yeah the LE seems to work the best for me. Probots like to move around too much and the R series seem to switch between ranged and melee far too much on their own for my liking.
For me while levelling rifleman, I have a LE with two combat modules and one auto repair (if I had to do it again Id reverse those for two repair one combat), then sent the LE to attack the lair. It doesnt seem to matter too much how much damage you are doing as long as hes punching the lair they all aggro him. The only time I took aggro was certain hostile creatures. Gualamas on Naboo NEVER agro'd me.
Then Id pop off the critters attacking my LE. Everyonce in a while I had to get my hands dirtybecause I had to run close and give him a stim or three, but for the most part just lots ofbatteries and run the auto repair.
