I'm new to SWg so any information refardin this stuff would be great. Thanks in advance.
I've recently seen harvesting and crafting droids in game. Can you use the harvesting droids to say harvest from kills without the Scout skill? I mean if you're not a Scout can the droid still harvest?
Same with crafting droids. Can you use the droid to attempt combines and creations without having the skill points devoted to Artisan? For instance, could I use the crafting droid as a station to make weapon power-ups if i sold the skill points in artisan back?
Also I have an R-5 medical droid. Can anyone tell me if theres' anything ebyond a cosmetic difference in the quality of Medical droids and more importantly combat droids? Are there better combat droids than the base probot?
Speaking of combat droids, can you program them when grouped to attack anything that attacks you automatically? I mean have the droid without extra commands just attack anything attacking you? IE guard you in some way? I haven't been able to figure this out even using the guard command.
Sorry for the dumb questions and please know that your help/ input is greatly appreciated. Thanks..

You need to have scout to use the harvesting droids, you need to be a crafter to use the crafting stations. Most droids enhance your existing skills (with the exception of combat, stimpack, and possibly storage depending on how you look at it). Those are the only modules that even come close to "replacing" skills.
For medical droids, there isn't really a difference in droid type. Now, there are different qualities of medical modules, with the highest giving a medical rating of 110. For combat droids on the other hand, some are better at others. Of the top 3, probots do the most damage (though have the lowest HAM), LE repair droids have the most HAM (but do the least damage and move too slow), and R3's are the best average (this is assuming all these droids are completely loaded with combat modules, and all droids are advanced models).
To get them to attack anything that attacks you, just give them the "guard" command (or whatever you've programmed it to) with yourself targeted.

To add on to what my esteemed colleague has said regarding the Combat Droids:
You can also add auto-repair modules to droidsto make a "self-repair" droid. The best combos seem to be placing 1 combat module and putting in several auto-repair modules in one droid. You can get away with not placing a combat module in the D270 and the probot droid, and squeezing another auto-repair module. However, they will only do 1 point of damage per attack. All the other modules MUST have a combat module installed in order for it to guard you, attack for you or do any combat related commands.
The best combos seem to be (for an auto-repairing droid):
R3 with 1 combat and 5 auto-repair (Fast regeneration)
LE Repair Droid with 1 combat module and 2 auto repair modules (LE has the highest HAM in the game, but is not intended to do damage)
Probot Droid with 1 combat module and 4 auto-repair modules (as said above, you can also stuff 5 auto-repair modules in there, but you will do one damage)
The order presented above is usually the best for auto-repair purposes. The R3 has the fastest rate, but lower HAM than the LE. The Probot could have an equal amount of Repair rate, however, it would do less damage and would have lower HAM. The real benifit of the Probot is that it flies and has less of a likely hood of getting stuck behind a rock or something.
You just need to find a good balance of HAM, damage, and auto-repair for yourself. More information is contained in the Droid Engineering 101 FAQ that is stickied above. To be honest, all your answers would have been answered if you read through the FAQ. It is the best FAQ on the forums imo and it answers EVERYTHING that you would need to know. However, it is a good read and may take you a bit to get through.
Any additional questions may be answered there.

I remember calculating it out at some point, and I think the fight has to go on for something like 5 minutes before the R3's superior auto-repair overtakes the LE's superior HAM. Good if you don't want to carry any repair kits on you, but usually you'll have a chance to repair him in those 5 minutes.

You are right. Didn't really look at that. The best auto-repair tank is the LE-Repair droid (due to his insane HAM bar)

No you need to have at least Novice Scout.

No, you need to still have the proper crafting skill. All the Droid does is give you access to all your schematics, just like a Private crafting station.
Also I have an R-5 medical droid. Can anyone tell me if theres' anything ebyond a cosmetic difference in the quality of Medical droids and more importantly combat droids? Are there better combat droids than the base probot?
Med Modules (and their quality, max 110) make a med droid, the Chasis they are in has no effect on them.
The Probot is your best "killer."
However, as the others said, by adding auto-repair modules, you can make Tank droids that do less damage but live longer. The LE does better against really hard stuff that will kill it fast, but the R3 does better over longer fights. I prefer the R3 as a Tank for a few reasons.
Speaking of combat droids, can you program them when grouped to attack anything that attacks you automatically? I mean have the droid without extra commands just attack anything attacking you? IE guard you in some way? I haven't been able to figure this out even using the guard command.
There is a guard command, anything attacking you will then get attacked by the droid. You can also set the droid on Patrol.

There are no dumb questions, DE and Droids are very complex, heck, even those of us who have been around a long time still learn something new.
