Thread: The Fighting DE
When the game first went live, I remember the huge fighting droids that entered the cities to do combat. Was so much fun. Well, ok, take them away from the non DEs, but give the DE a fighting droid of old. Please.
The DE community has discussed this topic at length - do a search for "combat droid proposals" and keep an eye out for "hybird" - and you will have an idea of what we tried to get but was ulimately decided to be saved for another time, development-wise.
If/when combat droids are added at higher levels, it will likely be a seperate profession, or, as some of us hope, a "mini-profession" that doesn't require you to spend 1/3 of your points to get.
In any case, "hybird" doesn't seem to be the way the Dev team wanted to go, and in retrospect I think most experienced DE's understand that it was the right decision.

Yep. That's the line the DEV's gave us.
Too bad the Smuggler profession is right there to prove them hypocrites about a crafting/combat hybrid being out-of-balance because thats exactly what a smuggler is. Go figure. Well, no point in beating a dead horse.
And no, most experienced DE's thought it was a crap decision...

AS, I must respectfully disagree with you.
First, Smuggler isn't much of a crafting profession at all. Resource quality doesn't matter at all, neither does experimentation really. They just simply toss any old thing together for spices and such. That is why spices are cheap as heck, really really cheap. They don't exactly make much money of spices.
Then smugglers have slicng as well to go along with their combat abilities. Slicing is about the only reason that Smugglers actually go smuggler. Their combat abilities really are not that much at all either, simply because they do have other things going for them, albeit small things. Their combat vs crafting was balanced from the get go.
Smuggler started out as a Hybrid profession, there is no other profession like smuggler either, so if you want what smuggler has you take it.
Now for DEscontrolling Droids like Super Battle Droids. DE is a crafting profession at it's heart. It's nice to be idealistic and pretend that we are different because Droids are cooler then Harvestors or t21's, but were not. We are crafters who make a product. There are6 other crafting professions out there who are exactly like us. They simply make different products. Not one of them gets a bonus to using any of their products. Some of them have more sales then DE's, some have less, that's a different problem though. The key is that at the heart we are the same.
Now if DE's were given Droid Commander abilities, then we would have all the profit power of other crafting professions added with CH like abilities. Not only would this be unfair to the other crafting professions, but it would be bad for the DE profession. It would be unfair because nobody else had it. Even BE's can't use the pets that they make.
It would be bad for the DE profession, simply because you would have a TON of people picking up DE just to be a Droid Commander. These people would have little to no interest in actually making Droids, at least not initially. However, eventually some of them would. You would now have perhaps as much as 500% more DE's on a server then before, probably more honestly. Undercutting would get rampant, markets would flood, and the Droid economy would be in shambles. This would happen because you would have people who really only wanted to control Droids who now have the ability to make a "quick credit," tossing some droids together as well.
It was more then just the DEv line that they gave us. Many DE's saw how not only would it be unfair, but bad for DE's for us to be Droid Commanders as well.

Creature Handlers are able to have far more powerful pets than what they can tame for the normal Joe...why can't DEs create far more powerful droids for personal use? Put the DE back into the combat part of the game....would be soooo very simple.

.....yes expect some kind of one or 2 tree prof to be initiated when the devs decide to add higher endcombat droids(no clue when). i wont go on about the debates, there was many ppl that wanted DE to be the DC/DH. there was many against it....a very simple yes/no style poll was taken most of the responses were no to a DE/DC mix. there will always be some ppl that still think it would be a good route to go, and those that disagree....both options overall are reasonable and get the job done(albiet both ways have pros and cons), but the majority spoke out and they preferred a DC/DH over a mixed DE/DC...personally i think allot of the reason there was so much preference at one time for a DE/DC mix was that it was seen as a way to expedite getting to higher end combat droids faster.
just my 2 creds

Both you guys were on the opposing side of that argument at the time it was hashed out. And now that this much time has gone by, your both attempt to rewrite history and say the majority of DE's supported your view point. That was not the case by a long shot. So don't try and feed people this baloney that yours was the majority view point. It wasn't.
In any case, the horse is dead. No point beating it.
Actually read my post again, I said "many" not most nor a majority. I never once claimed to speak for the majority. I was very careful (and ussually am,) not to do that.
Many in my opinion means more then a dozen, which I believe is a fair number to use.
The majority of DEs at the time likely read these forums, much less post their opinions.
