I don't know that much about droids, but I have a harvesting droid and if I have him not doing anything for a few seconds, he takes off running. I've tried wiping patrol list, tried having him follow me, tried having him stay. Nothing works. What am I doing wrong?

Need more info. Is this when you're just standing around, when you're in combat, when you're doing something in particular. Is the droid grouped or not?

Not grouped. Happens when i'm in combat. I have to go chase him down and make him come back. Defeats the purpose of him being there to harvest stuff as I kill it.

What is happening is he is getting agroed by the mobs and running away. First, don't group him. Second make sure you are attacking the lair or whatever before you send him in. Keep them mad at you and not him.
You can also loop a macro tellnig him to follow you or harvest, this keeps him to task.

I didn't have him grouped. I was attacking the lair, but I have to target a corpse in order to send him in. I guess i'll have to loop a macro, but there has to be a better way. I can't be the only person with this problem.

Well you can get a Harvest droid with 1 combat module installed (or a Probot.) You will lose about 19-20 harvesting power though. The Droid wont run away, he will stand and fight.
Most of my customers either make sure they kill stuff before it agroes the droid, or they loop a macro. If you loop the macro, you can filter your screen spam so you don't see it.

I don't loop my macro, if I see him running off I just hit the hotkey for harvest and he will come back even if he is being attacked. The macro I use is;
/tellpet "Ranger" h;
Remember the quotes around his name (mine is named Ranger) and I use "h" for harvesting but you of course can use whatever you want.Makesure to use/tellpet, it isn't as annoying to the others hunting with you and it works for a greater range, at least in my experience. But if you just want him to stay with you without having to mess with that make sure to taunt everything that comes at him so he doesn't get aggro'd.

What type of crtitter were you hunting? Certain mobs have AoE attacks that will hit the droid and scatter him, even if he doesnt get aggro'd

Jenden is correct. Since your droid was not grouped, you aren't seeing him enter combat either from an AoE attack or otherwise. So, he is just trying to save his circuits!
A quick harvest macro to keep him on task would be:
Macro Name: Fetch
/tellpet (harvest command);-or- /shout (harvest command);
/pause 1;
/tellpet (follow me command);-or- /shout (follow me command);
/pause 1;
/macro Fetch;
I put my macro on a Function key, but that is subject to taste.
Hope it helps.
