Thread: What droids are for...
Seems that the biggest problem with the DE profession is that the Dev's don't seem to know what to do with droids. It's pretty clear from the novels and from both Star Wars Role playing games that Droids in the SW universe are used for three main purposes.
Manual Labor
Combat (although combat droid are supposedly not allowed by the empire during this time)
Skills
I think this last one is the one that the Dev's keep missing. Combat we have, even though it's boring with only one kind of combat droid. Manual Labor we can get now with droids who have the ability to carry objects. The big problem I see with Droids in this game is skills. Droids are most often used by people because the droid possesses a skill that they do not. R2 units for example are programmed with Astrogation charts and this is why they are installed into X-wings. The X-wing computer itself can not store or program itself but the R2 unit can. Protocol Droids are often purchased by those who are not savy in the ways of negation and also for their language abilities.
So anyhow, this is what I think needs to be done with droids in the game. We already have skill enhancing devices, the mechanics of having a droid provide you with a skill or to modify a skill would not be a difficult thing to add to the game. I see very few skills in the game that a Droid could not modify. Even creature handler for example. It is not hard to believe a droid programmed with 100's of years of knowledge in animal husbandry from planets all over the galaxy, a zoo droid for example.
Combat droids
Lastly, I just wanted to say that there could be all types combat droids other then just the probot. From Episode I and II we have at least 3 other types of droids, one of which already exists in galaxies as a mob.
Anyhow, thanks for reading these ramblings if you have and please spread this idea. Droids providing skill modifiers is the way to go.
