Scout is a good secondary if you want to explore.
Naturally you'll have Novice Artisan and mastered the Engineering tree in order to become a Droid Engineer so having some scout will help with resource gathering.
Personally I'm going to take some Architect with my Droid Engineer. It's allegedly easier to get a private crafting station through Architect (not to mention a nice home to put it in). Also Architect gets bigger resource harvesters and factories (from what I understand).
The best thing about it is that Architect has the exact same requirements as Droid Engineer so you won't have to side-track to get both professions (you will have to gain a bit more Artisan experience though).
Of course nothing (for me) is cast in stone. I'm going to play the game and see where it takes me.

I've done doctor and rifleman, both turned out well. My suggestion is play whatever entertains you, at the end of the day thats what counts.

Scout's ok, like has been mentioned it allows you to collect hide and bone and such. Also enables you to create camps, so thats a good thing if you want to pull out a droid on the fly somewhere out of town. The terrain modifiers are good if your going to do any kind of walking. And if you intend to shoot at creatures then the bonus to hit is good, though i've heard people say it doesnt work. And of course you'll get more and more detailed examnine info on creatures as you advance up scout. At master scout you'll be able to tell the exact CL of creatures. Well, those are the benefits of scout.
I'd recomend playing whatever you wanna play. Theres no best profession to complement DE.
