Droid Engineer Archive

It occured to me a while back that in the game I play a Droid Engineer where I build and repair droids. In real life I work as a computer tech where I build and repair computers. The only difference between what i do for fun and what I do for a living seems to be a pair of wheels and a few cute beeping noises every 30 seconds (and even then I get those every reboot ).

Now that I've established a flimsy link between SWG and what I'm going to talk about next, I might as well get on with it. Unfortunately, this doesn't have any wheels (yet) but I thought some of you would like to see what oddball computer I built a few days ago anyhow. Mac lovers out there, be warned...

Were you able to salvage the mouse? The "original" mouse would probably become a collector's item someday.

Right on. I was hoping you would post pics of this. I remember when you and I started talking about the possibility of making this fly.

Normal 200 W power supply (a little one that i found at a Fry's Electronics). Soldered some cabling together to run the touchpad and the screen from it also. Motherboard is a mini-itx Via Epia 10000.

I actually have several original mice. We found a boxload of them at work so I salvaged the best of the lot and intend to actually 'mod' one of them out with a minioptical mouse undeneath (and split the large button into two buttons).

Wow. I really like this. I have always been a fan of those tine macs. It would be awesome to have one that had the power to do email and other basic functions. You selling these?

Heh. Pretty nice job, and my Powerbook didn't burst into flames at the sight of that OS on the screen.

If I hadn't had to give away my old SE/30 before moving, I was going to turn it into an aquarium like so:

That was the original fate of this thing, though the person doing it lost interest just after hollowing it out. A piece of luck, I suppose.

But email? Hah! I posted those screenshots on the boards with it Not only that, it's a wireless File and Print server in my kitchen, and I can also burn movies from my digital camera onto it (as well as plug it into a television). Soon as I get a set of cheap flat speakers they'll be going inside of it also so I have a portable file/music server for LAN parties. As you can see, this thing has gotten quite an overhaul. from 8 Megahertz to 1 Gigahertz, 256 KB of RAM to 256 MB of RAM (soon to be 512).

A lot of people have actually asked me if I'm selling these and sadly the answer is no. The main reason is the screen alone cost more than all the other pieces combined ($400 american. That's my project money for the year gone). If ever I find 8.4" flatscreens for $150 (or less)as well as a nice small stash of the cases then I'd probably start ebaying them off.
