What we all know ...

In the opening scenes of the first Star Wars movie (Episode 4), Lucas presents us with the capturing of a star ship and the escape of two droids. This sets up for us acentral theme of the galaxy, mechanical beings.

In the opening scenes of Episode 1, Lucas agains presents us with a series of events with droids being an integral portion of the life style. Protcol droids, droidekas, and battle droids, not to mention a series of astromechs.

This has thrilled and excited many viewers of the StarWars movies so much so that a generation later people are still excited about this fantasy world. We enjoy it so much so that the people on this forum have put good money down to purchase this game and every month pay for the opportunity to delve into this world personally.

This game...

Literally, there are thousands of posts regarding the playing of role of Droid Engineer. Most with plea to fix a variety of things that relate directly to the environment that we have seen with Lucas' depiction of his view of the StarWars fantasy.

SOE is telling us that this is not what they intend for us to be able to do, folks. Lucas is wrong, we are wrong for wanting it. We will never have the basics of the world we have embraced and brought into our lives.

  • We will never have a Surgical droid that can heal.

  • We will never have a Repair droid that can repair other droids.

  • We will never have a droid to assist with harvestors. (Ask Owen about that)

  • We will never be able to have multiple droids available to us.

  • Droids that require Luke, HAN, and all of the other characters to carry around back packs full of batteries. (You missed that in the movies didn't you)

  • Droids that can slice. Luke and Han will never be able to get out of trouble again!

  • We will never have the multiple utility droids that the Jawas were storing in their vehicle or thatseveral authors have written about in the autorized series.

Folks, SOE and Lucas Arts, thus far we have not been delivered expectaions from the basic movies. Nor the real live one would expect from behind the movies. SOE / Lucas arts have nicely added in and expanded professions not really central to the StarWars fantasy world and left thiscore theme severly lacking. Most of these professions I have enjoyed fully.

It is my beleif that we need to hold SOE responsible for delivering a working game that follows the themes of the fantasy world we love so much. Until the game adequately reflects that view we should push SOE for changes that reflect the StarWars vision. Nothing lessshould be acceptable.

Not that I want to throw a monkey wrench into this... but .. well.. here goes...

Your premise that the Star Wars movies is about droids.. is flawed. If you have followed ANY of the interviews that George Lucas gave, you'll remember that theentire original Star Wars Trilogyis about "The redemption of Anakin Skywalker".

Just because Droids were the FIRST of the principal characters introduced, that does NOT mean that the entire genre is about Droids.

Should Sony and Lucas Arts be worried? (15000 users * 5 accts = ~$13MIL in potential lost gross annual revenue) If I were the CEO for either LA or SOE, I would certainly be worried.

Yes you are absoutely correct it is about the redemption of Anakin Skywalker. No argument with this. However there is a predominance of droids used as utility devices at home, on ship, or everywhere there is person involvement. Except for a Cantina to two.

Would you concede that premise that utility droids are a core Lucas theme?

Yes. You may consider the point conceded. Droids ARE an"important" part of the Star Wars Universe.

And, based on what I have seen, the utilitarian aspects of droids in SWG was "probably" overlookedduring the process of initial game design. If this is true, then it is no wonder (to me) that the Dev's are having such a difficult time correcting this deficiency. Once an application grows as large as this one obviously is, it becomes exponentially more difficult to rennovate. All that can really be done is to patch it in the hopes that "some" of the fundamental problems may be addressed in a way that all may benefit.

Don't get me wrong... I would genuinely enjoy being able to field any droid I could.. with any ability-enhancing skill that was required. We DO have ample evidence, in the films AND in the literature, that droids ARE key components in "getting the job done." I just do not know if the Developers can afford the time and expense of rebuildingan application that took 5(?) years to create.

Yes, but besides Anakin, the only 2 characters that appear in every movie? C-3P0 and R2-D2. The main theme may be Anakin, but the journey of those two droids is a strong secondary theme.

Umm... are you forgetting about:

Luke Skywalker?

Lei Organa?

Darth Vader?

Emperor Palpatine?

Han Solo?

Chewbacca?

Their parts in the original trilogy were as important.. if not MORE important... that R2-D2's and C-3P0's parts.

I seem to rememberthat they were ALL in every one of the original Trilogy.. and.. make no mistake... SWG is set in the days between "A New Hope" and "The Empire Fights Back."We should ALLignore "The Phantom Meanace AND The Clone Wars".

probaably over looked....

definatly over looked to the point of them doing absoultly nothing....

I blame Koster's overwhelming mis management of the game....

The time and effort spent on creatures should have gone into droids...

But IMO the thing was that ole Raph alrady had the creature thing worked out since the inital game was just a cut and paste of his UO2, a medival fanatsy where there was no technology. IMO they picked the worst team possible to develop the game.

Droids where not an oversight. The orignal devs just didnt give a hoot about Star Wars and hated anything technological/scifi. It is obvious they had a distaste for robots but a instead focus all there attention on the Beatmaster profession.
