I play a wookie on sunrunner. I bought an advanced protocol droid with the intention of using him to translate for me. What do I need to purchase/do to have him translate.

Lol....a protocol droid cannot translate You have to 'teach' people your wookie comprehension if they don't already know it.

Drumheller - Wookiee Smuggler
Gimer - Young Wookiee trying to find his place in the galaxy...

So droids cannot translate?

Now I understand why so many people want this profession redone.

SO what can I do with it?

Um, probably nothing, unless it's got a module in it, then whatever the module put in it was...

Here are how Droids work currently.....right now, Droids have no "inherint functions." A Protocol Droid doesn't Translate, a Binary Load Lifter doesn't carry things, and a Repair droid doesn't even repair. A droid's abilities are solely determined by what modules are put into it. Each Droid has a certain number of slots for modules (although there are Socket Clusters which allow us to put three Modules into one module slot).

The different modules are as follows:

1) Medical Modules: The droid will improve on the healing capabilities of the player, as well as allow them to heal wounds outside of a hospital or campsite.

2) Item Storage Module: Stores a handful of items. I think the most you can store is up to 10 or something close.

3) Data Storage Module: Broken and completely worthless right now. I believe all they do is store extra waypoints, but even that might be bugged.

4) Crafting Modules: These allow the Droid to act as a private crafting station. Higher-end items require the person to be near a Private Station to produce them, so rather than be stuck inside a building, the droid owner can craft wherever the droid is out, such as in cities, in the field, etc.

So now I know what you're going to say...."That's it?" And the answer is....yup. Of all the droids we can make, those are the only uses, except for one extra: combat. The DZ70 and Probot droids are capable of combat, but only the latter is worth anything in battle, and even then they're not as good as a Creature Handler pet.

So now I know what you say next...."If a droid's function is determined solely by the modules in it, what's the point in paying for a higher priced Droid type if the function is the same? If an R5 is just as good as a Protocol droid, why pay for the more expensive one?" And to answer that, I say, "There is no answer. That's the biggest problem with the profession right now."

So yeah....your Protocol Droid itself doesn't do much at all I'm afraid.

That was a great post, SigmaTech. I, also on Sunrunner, am in the market for a combat droid to help me out in the field. I am not able to have a creature-pet, because I suffer from severe allergies. ((Really, I don't like "Pet Wars" and refuse to be a part of it)) Your post helped me understand how droids work, and their capabilities, or lack thereof. I will be donating to my local DE soon. Thanks!

So lets see.

A. Droids vary in price based on what they look like and how many modules they hold?

B. Of the listed modules the Medical and Crafting are worth even considering?

C. Droids in combat is a huge waste of time and money??

WOWI cant wait to grind out the 600k plus xp to get to master!!!

*sighs* Great summery of the current state of DE. Lots of grinding and lots of resources to make a mobile crafting machine and mobile medic lab

Storage module at lvl4 is not even worth it. A cheap travel pack stores more.

Data, lol. I'd like to see holographic data messages...now that would be sweet but ....Data storage would have to work for that.....

How much are you willing to pay to have a lil droid follow you around and beep at you while you are able to heal your wounds in the field?

Actually - the personal crafting station use is quite good ... think of the possibilites ... Architects and the like crafting while on harvester runs and so forth ... they are quite useful... i crafted a bunch of probe droids while running to my harvesters the other day because a BH wanted some real quick and i could do both at once

Dont forget the absolute biggest money maker:

Mass producing BH droids (Seekers and Probes) ... They pay well, and they use em like they are going out of style. They have netted me quite a hefty sum on my vendor in a little under a week!
