Droid Engineer Archive
Thread: I am sick of it!
Everytime I go into this game I find yet one more thing that is stupid or broken.
Today I made my first R2 unit. I really wanted to have a R2 unit that looked like the famous R2 in the movies. What do I get after spending buying a factory, building stupid advanced droid brains that add no additional smarts to the droid? I get a god **edit** grey and red (UGLY) R2 unit!
I have no control over how it looks and it just really pisses me off.
I just read the mega patch notes and once again nothing for us.
I am going to quit Star Wars Galaxies. I have had enough.

Name one MMORPG that wasnt buggy at release?
You're still here? The answer is simple, there has never been one.
Its been 3 months and the devs have fixed alot of issues, most the critical bugs are gone and things are getting better. If you don't have patience then take a sledge hammer to your computer and never play with other ppl again.
Is the game perfect? No
Is it better than it was 3 months ago? Yes
Is it better than it was 2 months ago? Yes
Is it better than it was 1 month ago? Yes
/soapbox off
You know..
I played UO at release.
I played EQ at release
I played Asheron's Call at release
I played Dark Age of Camelot at release.
With the exception of UO, I have never been so disappointed with a game. I am sorry. I love the potential of this game--but I don't see where it is going. They are not going to re-develop droid engineering from the ground up? Do you not see that our profession is a carbon copy of the creature handler profession? I am taming deeds for droids I put together as if they are some form of animal. Oh wait, how did all of that junk I piled into my crafting tool turn into a piece of paper called a deed?
Where is the immersion? Just where is it?
How hard is it to change some text so that perhaps we don't see things like "tame" in our profession? How hard is it to let us have more than one droid out at a time? Please don't tell me that it turns the balance wheels against the world because -- newsflash -- our droids are pretty much worthless!
Why am I angry? Well it is because I wanted this game for so long. I wanted to craft droids. I wanted to enjoy the immersion that the Star Wars universe offered. At every turn I get disappointed.
I tried the PVP Battlefields--no one was there.
I tried missions--and after a time I just don't see me killing womp rats for fun and profit.
I have now gone Overt and I just get killed when I am AFK.
I don't see the need to join hunting parties as well--there is nothing there for me. I am not interested in upping my combat/pistol experience. What is a droid engineer to do on trips to kill yet more animals?
Guys--I am sorry. Today with the R2 droid that doesn't look like R2 it was the last straw. How can anyone who is in charge not at least give us the decorations that is Star Wars? Hell I worked a long time to get to be able to make protocol droids. Hah!! Can't do that -- there is no resources available for that.
I am just tired of it all.
Defend this game all you want--but in all of the game releases that I mentioned there was enough "depth" to keep me there while things got worked out.
Just what is there that is keeping you fine droid engineers there? Ah I know.. the next creature handling feature that somehow falls into droid engineering space. How nice.

Goodbye. You won't be missed. The game will be better when the rest of "your type" burn out and can't handle the game anymore.
Try playing Quake.

Clalron, heres my take.
Never played UO.
Played EQ from release for 2 and a1/2 years as an Enchanter. I chose enchanter because the description said, could enchant weapons for other players, I thought "sure, nice group friendly skill I will go for it". Guess what I could not find a group to save my life. Then they added Clarity to the game (as you will recall around 6 months after launch), All the sudden i was everyones best friend. Need a group? Turn on LFG flag, within 10 mins you have your choise of 3 groups. People that could not be bothered to spit on you all of the sudden are your best pals.
How about rogues in EQ? Took them over a year to go from one of the most despised classes to one of the great classes of the game.
AO, I started that in Beta. Was in beta for 3 months. What a piece of crap that turned out to be. I stayed with it for 3 months after launchtill I could not take the lag or the implant travesty that ensued. It was horrid to play, more fluff than content. It was sorely unbalnaced, laggy, and riddled with exploits that 90% of the population seemed willing to take advantage of.
DAOC, was also with that from launch, and had high hopes. But from the start, high end content was missing. Andwhen they attempted to "balance" the classes, Mythic seemed to like using the sledge hammer approach, killing some classes, making others god-like, then in a month, nerf the hell out of one class while giving another a huge boost, only to change it again. And when they added the darkness falls dungeon, all they did was ensure the strong got stronger, and the weak got weaker. A fine idea for a game, but not even close to balanced at launch, and all attempts to balance classes, was done with 0 forethought.
Now as to SWG, yes there are problems, less so than with other games I have seen 3 months after laumch. Lets look at the other 3 games I have played and how they were 3 months after going live.
EQ: Holy cow, not sure why I stayed with that game till they fixed the major bugs. Lag? You kidding? EQ was a lag fest. That is when the servers were even up. Try to log on 3 months from launch, and you spent more time in the chat rooms than playing. And bugs so large you could drive a Mac truck though them. Remember people used to levitate get on a rock, and attack creatures with impunity? How long did that go on? Over a year as I recall. It took close to a year from launch for EQ to be a valid playable enjoyable game.
AO: Only could take 3 months of this piece of... well if I say it it will be edited, but you know what i mean. 2 months after launch this game had such a huge memory leak, that even with 1 gig of memory (alot at the time AO came out), the best you could hope forin a city was to get 50-100 feet before you were were kicked to windows. And even that movement tookyou 5 mins. People exploited the implant system so that a level 20 with implants could could easily kick the ass of a level 60 without implants. Missions? They were all exactly the same. At least with SWG you can go from planet to planet and get new types of missions.
DOAC: I was most dissapointed in this game. A fairly stable platform, nice graphics. So what do they do? They screw up the classes so bad that true balance was never achievable. Remember smite clerics who could solo a whole group of 8 opponents? And how did they implement stealth? It was an instant invisiblity spell. Stealth classes became god like, so they tried to balance them only to mess make them more powerful against all other classes except stealth. And lets not forget the darkness falls dungeon that I mentioned earlier. Great idea guys, lets make the real strong realms stronger, and make theweak realms give up. Just a total screw up from day one.
Now as to SWG, yes i see HUGE and im talking HUGE problems in this game. SOE has to get a handle on the CH problem before everyone gets used to the status quo. Most of the reasons I looked forward to this game are not even in it at launch. 1st and foremost, DECENT FIGHTING DROIDS. But besides that, player cities. Vehicles. Player missions. Larger more fluid PvP battlefields.
Now as to why I am not quitting after 3 months like I did AO. I see HUGE potential in this game. And more importantly, I am not that impatient. I know DEs wont be fixed till after christmas. I know that most of the developers are pulling their hair out trying to figure out how to balance the pet classes, and I have a bit of faith. More importantly, as long as SOE takes the subtle approach to balancing the classses and not the Mythic method of making a class the flavor of the month, then nerfing the hell out of it, we have a chance to see a good game emerge.
So have faith,if as you say you played so many MMORGs from launch, think back, were any of the others really any better after 3 months? Hey, at least when you log on there is a 95% chance the servers are actually up. Compare that to any other game at 3 months, and I think you will see that this game is in no way perfect, but has more potential to become so than any of the others.
The communication is very bad, no argument there. Is it better than it was when the Correspondents first started, yep, certainly better than before them. Worlds better than in Beta, we had a count going on to see how long it could take between the time the Devs said the word Droid. I think the shortest time between Devs saying it in beta 3 was 3 weeks.
On the other hand, the Devs have said from the final beta introduction cutoff that Player Cities, Animal Mounts and Vehicles were the top 3 highest priority design projects post release and that all else aside from bugs was a secondary priority. Once they get even one or two of those things out of the way I think we'll see a drastic increase in manpower to other projects in SWG and they've all but admitted that we are in desperate need. There might be other professions that are a little more broken than we are, but we have a superior numbers of lunatics gracing our ranksthan eitherChefs and Squad Leaders so that means we get higher on the list than them.
guess some of the colors work

If everyone did what you say, there would be no people left. Many forget that what makes this type of game fun is the many different kinds of people that you play online with.
Many things stated are true, simple fixes are being ignored. How can you not change the default color? How can you not change text variables such as "Tame". Simple things could have been fixed to go a long way with us players.
I made Master Droid Engineer couple days ago and i managed too make a red/white and blue/white R2 yesterday..

You are delusional.
I have been a Master DE for quite a while now.
The fact of the matter is that the colors do not work. Every Advanced droid I make I pick a color because it makes me. Not 1 ever has come out the color I've made and I've made ALOT.

Clarion, usually when someone posts a thread like this, I'm all to happy to say "see ya, don't come back" but your complaint is just a venting. Folks reading this should recognize it as a vent. Feel better now? Just remember that these posts may discourage others that are on the very edge due to the problems with the class. Maybe you feel a little better, but maybe someone else feels a little worse. Clearly it's very easy to surrender skills, so you're obviously sticking with it for now.
So, of those games you spoke of, the only game that had a pretty good launch was AC. AC2 was pretty bad, though. AO was a total disaster and lives in most memories as the worst launch ever. One thing to think about is that AO and AC and AC2 are actually pretty decent games now.
SunFire,
Thank you--and you know you're right.
I really don't want to leave SWG. I just want to believe there is some plan--something to look forward to.
I am just frustrated that is all. I don't understand why the communication for our profession has been so bad. Sure we have a correspondent but even she is saying nothing serious is going on.
I pay for the game too--and I really would like to at least hear that there is a plan and that this is not how it is going to be.
Anyway, after calming down and playing some more I am going to tough it out despite the advice of others in this thread who just want me to leave because I am not hugging SOE right now.
I just think this whole thing could be a lot better if we knew what they planned for our profession. I just want "A New Hope"
Sorry, couldn't resist.
