Everyone thinks about droids from the movies - that's generally where all our dreams about that universe come from - the excitement, the intrigue, the battles, etc.
Droids in SWG just don't seem to be as much of a part of life as they did in the movies, in fact, they don't seem very utilitarian at all - and with anything, nothing is more damaging than what something is PERCEIVED to be, rather than what it truly is.
Droids in the game seem to be bogged down in the balance cesspool- they can't harvest better than a person, they can't fight better than a person, they can't talk or interact even as well as a vendor...they are pretty lifeless, no matter how much they move around and beep.
MDEs, in my opinion, should be seeking repeat business in servicing droids, though, obviously they need to originally build them as well.
Think of Chewbacca...he was an engineer/tinkerer of some skill, fixing both starships and droids numerous times - though I doubt he could build either from scratch.
And there we have C3-PO getting blown into space junk also numerous times - but did 'his' owner go out and buy a new droid? No, he gathered up the parts and let the tinkerer 'MDE' fixit.
I don't have a droid because I can't afford one; I don't have a droid because I don't NEED one.
I'm fairly disappointed that droids aren't more of a part of life in this galaxy.

Sorry, it's just that I have the exact same feeling.
Droids I see the most are freebie helper droids.
That does help a little the starwars feeling, but it's R2 all over the place, boring.
Oh, and Wow, I can't do that, and will probably never try.
