the answer is simple...
0. make a dummy of all modules...
1.create a combat cluster:
* select any module you made... if the module slot lights up in the crafing window it means that module can used within the combat cluster
* make a NOTE of it!
2. rinse and repeat for the generic cluster
3. Make dummy combat andgeneric clusters
* you don't NEED to add a module
Now you can use similar techniques to determine which cluster can be put in which droid. And thus also which modules can be put into which droid.
Also: read stickies? Droid Engineering 101 for a starter. I believe to become a good DE you must know how you can combine it all into usefulness. The only way by doing that is by actually building droids...

Ah heck, I'll be nice.
This is an excerpt from the DE 101 stickie:
Combat-Capable Socket Cluster
The Combat-Capable Socket Cluster can accept any of the Droid Service Module Harnesses, including the Droid Combat Module. Up to 3 modules can be placed into the Cluster and can only be installed in the Adv R3, Basic R3, Adv R2, Basic R2, Adv Probot, Basic Probot, and Adv LE.
General Droid Module Socket Cluster
The General Droid Module Socket Cluster can accept any of the Droid Service Module Harnesses, excluding the Droid Combat Module. Up to 3 modules can be placed into the cluster and can only be installed in the Adv BLL and Adv Surgical Droids.

I made a general cluster with a merchant barker, weapon crafting, and a data storage module, but can't seem to load it into any droid construction. If I can't do this, how can I make Astromechs, or Barkers, Crafters, etc? They don't go in the combat cluster slots, or the defensive slots. Only been master for a bit over a week, so I may be totally screwing it up, but advice is appreciated.

some droids take general some take combat clusters.
The modules can go in either.

Rule 101...
Read DE 101
Long ago I used it a lot. Now I gander at from time to time. Its a great tool and will help a lot in learning the ways of the DE.
