Thread: Uses for Data Storage Modules?
What use are they?
You can't store missions or pets (any more) in them, right?
So does that mean you can only store waypoints in them? Or maybe schematics?
Right now, only schematics can be stored.
Yes, that's right. Enormous quantities of space for.. manufacturing schematics.
Waypoints used to be storable in droids, but that was removed for a while because letting droids store waypoints meant droids could store missions, so you could get two more, and store those, and get two more...
I guess that waypoint storage will be reenabled at some point, once they've come up with a decent way to allow it without the mission exploit.
But has it been suggested that a "Pet Storage Module" would be GREAT?
Creature Handlers are yelling and screaming for more pet storage, and droid engineers are of course always looking for ways to make their droids more enticing to buyers... I guarantee you'd sell a LOT of droids to CHs if SOE added this feature.
In fact, it would probably be so popular that they'd have to put in a cap on the maximum number of droids you can have because CHs would want to have 20 droids so they could store hundreds of pets.
Heh. Pet storage was pulled out because it was being abused... And because droids ARE pets, and could be recursively stored ad infinitum.
That's not the only container within a container problem this profession experiences...
But what if they added a new pet storage unit that only allowed tamed pets, not droids? They'd need to set a limit on how many droids people could have in this case to prevent people from picking up 20 droids just for a ton of pet storage.
How much would that hurt DEs if players could only have say... 5 droids maximum?
If you could only have 5 droids, and each could only have a single pet storage unit, and each one of those could only hold... hmmm... let's say 4 pets. Then that means that every CH would have 4 or 5 of these for a total of 16 to 20 additional pets stored (roughly doubling storage for a master).
One problem would be that while it only doubles storage for a master, it would be a huge increase for lower level CHs.
IDEA:
Add certs for droid modules to other classes.
So you could even have multiple pet storage modules and receive the certs for them at different points in the CH tree. This would give a LOT of business to DEs as people come back to upgrade their droids to ones with better storage modules.
This same system could be used to have multiple slicing enhancement modules, with the certs for them being given in the Smuggler tree, as well as various crafting modules for artisan professions.
And those harvester type modules I saw suggested could be given as certs in the Surveying line, etc.. etc...
"How much would that hurt DEs if players could only have say... 5 droids maximum?"
There already is a maximum on the number of droids you can own, and guess what? that number is 5 ![]()
And actually, I'm not too keen on the idea of storing so many pets. Maybe a droid that held only 1 pet, 2 at the extreme. In my personal opinion there are already way too many creature pets out there. In game last night, I headed to a populated site so I could start macro-shouting my available to teach skills, since I need the apprentice xp to train Master Artisan. I got to the bank at Coronet and every single person there had their pet out. They were comparing them, petting them, taming them, etc. I stood there for a second, taking it all in. At first glance, the creatures are admittedly impressive, but I suddenly realized I wasn't playing Star Wars. I had no idea what game I was on anymore. So I just grabbed the next shuttle, went back to my house and logged off. I didn't get anything done last night. This wasn't the first time I felt that way either. I don't mean to say CHs don't have a place, but I can recall only one CH in the movies, the rancor keeper at Jabba's Palace. You might include the Geonosians, but those were mounts and executioners, not necessarily pets. Either way, CH was not a big part of the Star Wars universe. There really should be some fixes and balancing issues to bring droids into popularity before adding uses for CHs to expand.
Aye
So you know where I'm coming from - I'm a Master Pistoleer and about half full on CH skills (intending to master). And I'll admit that I think CH is over powered in pve - very over powered. A low level CH can have a pet that is far better at tanking than the best melee player is. That's just not right... I agree it doesn't seem Star Warsy either, but I do enjoy the pet aspect of the game - taming and using them. They make soloing very viable, that's for sure.
As for DEs - I think you guys need a MAJOR boost. This is Star Wars after all. Everyone should have doids. No matter what your class is, there should be a droid that helps you be better at it. Plus of course there should be general purpose droids for combat, storage, etc... I guess if things were balanced correctly you'd at least see as many droids around as pets, and to seem Sci-Fi / Star Wars themed, there should really be many more.
The biggest change I'd like to see would be automated droids that don't need to be with you. Why can't you load up a droid with crafted items and tell it to go take a shuttle to Corellia and sell them at the star port? Why can't you tell a droid to go add power and collect resources from your harvesters on 4 different planets? Or have a droid go put something in your bank, or drop something off at your house? Droids should be used all the time to help with everything!
But back to being on topic
As a CH I'd love to be able to store more pets. I'd buy droids just for that purpose even if they only held 1 or 2 pets each.

And that 5 droid limit is not only other players but DE's as well can only have 5 droids. Isn't our profession great!
actually, DE can have 5 .... regular folks can only have 3
