Thread: The Droid Engineers Strike Back

OK guys (& girls?), so the Hybrid plan is out the window (hats off to you though Sodan - it was an excellent plan), we won't be getting > CL13 droids until after the Space Expansion and we still don't have a locked feature list for Publish 8. Old Masters seem to be deserting the profession in droves and the future looks bleak. But all is not lost. To horrendously mis-quote one of the extended universe novels:

"What the Devs have set up there will stop almost any player. Time to remind them that the Droid Engineer profession doesn't take just any player."

It's time to regroup and get back to work. We know we can't get > CL13 combat droids in any earlier, but we can spend the next six months or however long it takes working out exactly how we want CL13 droids to appear. There are already two plans that I have seen posted:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=droid_engineer&message.id=77977

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=droid_engineer&message.id=77878

Both are well thought out and look like a solid foundation on which we can build if we wish, so lets do to them what we did to the Hybrid plan, namely finding and fixing any flaws and slowly shaping them into a plan that at least 90% of DE's can agree upon.

Another alternative is combat droids through faction pets. We need a proper discussion. Do we want faction pets or a droid handler/commander profession? Can we have both? Do we want both?

In addition to the > CL13 combat droid issue we also have the space expansion to consider. We need to get a clear plan of where we as Droid Engineers wish to fit in. We need to throw so many good ideas at the devs that they can't move without accidentally implementing something we requested.

Finally we need to continue pushing for more content NOW. Whether this be through new utility modules, new chassis, modifications to existing droids, whatever people want. It would be great if we could propose so many new useful easy-to-implement utility modules that the Devs could implement one per publish and still feel like they're not giving us anything.

I know a lot of you have been in this profession a lot longer than I have and you're getting tired but don't give up. It's time to show SOE that the only way to shut us up is to fix the profession or remove it from the game. And while we're at it lets force them to change their tone from 'we don't visit the DE boards much because of the negativity and hostility' to 'we don't visit the DE boards much because it shows up our lack of creative thinking too much'.

This pretty well sums it up. The only way things will get better is if we move forward strong. I know we've been down this road before, I know some are tired of it and can't go on, and thats fine, but don't try and drag the rest of us down with you. Drop the profession if you want, stop posting on the boards where your conviced your ignored, it just clears up some of the static for good ideas to get through instead of being drowned out by rants.

Exactly we can efect change if we try .. the hybrid pland is a good example it went from sodans desk though the comunity was tweeked and found its way a Developers meeting i meen WOW .. it may have been rejected .. but that meens it was considerd first!

If we get a plan in the same position that thay can "swalow" and work off of then thats amazing!

I want you all to know im looking at all the posts and considering all the changes you sugest when i relase 1.2 it will be a GROUP EFFORT.

and just for gigls heres a quote from: Raph "Holocron" Koster - SWG Chief Creative Officer

Anything that is a dramatic enough problem that hundreds of players have to resort to using the in-game petition tool to ask for help is generally going to become a top priority because it's clearly breaking the game for those people. - 07-18-2003 12:18 PM

and a great one from : Kevin "Q-3PO" O'Hara - SWG Community Relations Manager

You Droid Engineers have had to suffer through some tough times. The Devs do not hate the profession and have plans to address some of the larger concerns........ In the meantime, please accept my apology. - 10-13-2003 02:57 PM

LOL this is almost 2 funny I am glad I read it ... thanks for the laugh....

YOU want to see some really good posts about our DROID profession ... just go back about 8 9 months ago and catch up. If the DEVS cannot get it right from all that good input and came out with this LAME pach 7, how do u expect them to do anything better with these new ideas?

The DEV's are going to do what they want and don't care at all about this forum. The only reson it is here is to put on a show for all of us.

Just MY 2 cents worth on the topic of trying to work with the DEV's...

I was there 8 and 9 months ago, some of thoseideas were mine. What I do know and what still holds true though is there is if no one is giving good input then we are guaranteed things won't get better. If we do then we just have history saying things most likely won't get better. I'd rather have some chance than no chance.

patches should have been ideas... that was a random one.

I have a hard enough time keeping up to date with all that's being posted currently. I don't have time to go back and read all the excellent ideas that were posted nine months ago. Patch seven was disappointing - there can be no argument on that - but I don't think things are as bad as everyone makes out. I've read many posts on these boards about how Droid Engineers are the red-headed stepchildren of Galaxies, and how we'll never be what we should be because the Devs love the Creature Handlers so much. Guess what. I've also read plenty of posts in the Creature Handler forums about how THEY are the red-headed stepchildren of Galaxies. We can't both be right. I've read posts about how much of a joke combat droids are and how nobody uses them. I've also seen plenty of people using them in game and being happy with them.

The DEV's are going to do what they want and don't care at all about this forum. The only reson it is here is to put on a show for all of us.

Then how do you explain Sodan's hybrid proposal? The community worked together to present a plan that 90%* were happy with and that seemed balanced. OK, so it was shot down in the end but it received serious attention from the developers, at least if TK is to be believed (and I know of no reason not to trust him on this).

Just MY 2 cents worth on the topic of trying to work with the DEV's...

I'm awake. I just havea different perspective to you. OK, so even with posting thousands of great ideas we might not get what we want, but I'm pretty sure that if we post nothing but negative comments and unconstructive criticism we definitely won't get what we want. Point me to the profession that got completely revamped as a result of their wining and complaining without providing any constructive contributions of their own.

I'm not saying that we should let the Devs off lightly when they fail to deliver a promise, or when they demonstrate a complete lack of understanding about the issues that affect our profession. What I am saying isthat every time they come back to us and say "Sorry, we can't implement idea X because of reason Y" we reply with "OK, can you give us a bit more feedback on what's wrong with that, and while you're at it look at our new proposals A and B". With the number of dedicated and create players we have on this board we'll have ideas to spare long after the Devs have run out of excuses.

I brought this up before. Possibly our best means to expand our profession is to get the other professions to ask the developers for droids to extend their capabilities. If the developers hear a ground-swell in multiple dimensions then they may take the requests seriously.

TK put together a rather comprehensive list of utility droids. Maybe that list should be brought up to the other forums so it can be reviewd by other players and enhanced. If for example the Tailors (insert otherprofessions here) find a proposal that they really want they can push the envelope for their profession and ours.

exactly, and i dunno if it was you slaier but someone suggested to TK in the new module thread, that he should get in touch with the other professions' correspondants to get input and support on new modules for each profession.

CL13 droids? What the heck is a CL13 droid going to do? It seems like were just trying to ask for something lame rather than something great.

Im not making fun of it, I just dont understand. Why would CL13 droids be so important? If you mean everyone can use a level 13 droid, well...ok, but thats still a far cry from Super Battle Droids and Destroyers.

CL13's what we've got now, so everyone's just saying greater than we've got now
